Emmy could feel her cheeks getting warm, but underneath the embarrassment, a deeper sense of admiration was blooming in her chest. This was the future First Lady. The way she saw through everything and kept so clear-headed... it was honestly impressive, something you didn’t see every day.
She nodded and said quietly, “I was being presumptuous, Cadence.”
With that, she turned to leave, not wanting to make things more awkward for herself. But right as she was about to walk away, Cadence reached for the taco and dipped it into the sauce Emmy had brought. She took a bite, started to chew, then stopped, her whole body pausing mid-motion.
Cadence stared at the little dish of sauce on the table, her expression shifting through so many emotions. Only someone who really cared about her would remember this weirdly specific preference. Seven parts soy sauce, three parts mature vinegar. Not one drop more, not one drop less.
“Come here,” Cadence said suddenly. “Sit down. Let’s talk.”
Emmy’s heart jumped, a mix of nerves and unexpected hope. She quickly turned around and sat down across from Cadence.
Cadence was still staring at the sauce. “Did James make this?” she asked.
“Yes,” Emmy replied.
Then, out of nowhere, Cadence smiled. It was the first genuine smile Emmy had seen from her today. Emmy had seen plenty of photos of Cadence smiling in news articles, but those always looked perfectly measured, dignified, almost like they’d been practiced in front of a mirror. This smile was different. It was like a patch of warm sunlight breaking through on a cold winter day—real, alive, and full of feeling.
Cadence let out a soft, almost playful sigh. “That boy... I can’t believe he still remembers.”
She lifted her eyes, studying Emmy with newfound curiosity. “Do you know the last time I had tacos with this sauce?”
Emmy pressed her lips together and shook her head, honest and a little nervous.
Cadence’s gaze drifted away, lost in thought. “It was twenty-four years ago, the night before he got sent to the border. The old lady wanted me to make him a bowl of tacos as a send-off, but he wouldn’t eat unless I joined him. So, I made this sauce. Seven parts soy sauce, three parts vinegar.”
