Even after Cadence left, Emmy couldn’t calm down. She never would have guessed that the person she wanted most to be friends with would finally welcome her in, all thanks to a little dish of dipping sauce.
At some point, James walked over, his tall figure blocking out the light around her. Emmy glanced up at him, then back at the now-legendary sauce on the table. A smile tugged at her lips.
“Thank you. Really.”
James met her eyes, his gaze so deep and steady it almost pulled her in. “You and I don’t need to say that.”
“I’m just doing what I should, making things easier for you.”
His words made Emmy’s heart skip. She looked away, trying to escape the heat in his eyes. She pressed her lips together and didn’t say anything else, just stood up and headed to the bedroom.
Grandma was already asleep after her treatment, her breathing calm and steady. Emmy tucked the blanket around her a little tighter, stood watching her for a moment, then quietly turned to leave.
As soon as she stepped outside, James came after her. “Let me drive you home.”
But from the corner of her eye, Emmy spotted Tyler rolling out in his wheelchair too. She paused and shook her head. “That’s not necessary.”
Without looking back, she climbed straight into her car. Only through the window did she finally let herself stare at James’s handsome face, completely losing herself for a moment.
Then the car pulled away.
James stayed where he was, watching the empty road. The spark in his eyes faded bit by bit.
…
Back at Moonlight Bay, Emmy felt exhausted, like she’d been running all day. She didn’t even bother to rest. Instead, she picked up her phone and made a call. “Aidan, come to my study.”
A few minutes later, Danny showed up, smartly dressed as always. Since Starlight Corporation’s agricultural project took off after the holidays, Emmy had promoted him to be her executive assistant and given him a lot more responsibility. These days, Danny could handle almost anything for her, no problem.
Emmy leaned back in her big leather chair and gave him a few things to follow up on.
