Emmy clung to James, still breathing hard, her cheeks flushed with color that hadn’t quite faded yet. Somewhere in the background, her phone started ringing. It kept at it, relentless, until it finally gave up and went silent. A message notification popped up right after.
She pressed her face against his warm chest, her voice low and a little rough. “I want to shower.”
James nodded. “Alright.”
Carefully, he slid one arm under her legs and the other around her waist, lifting her up and carrying her to the bathroom. The hot water washed over them, easing away some of the wildness still buzzing just beneath her skin.
When they came out, James wrapped her up in a huge, fluffy towel and gently set her down on the vanity, like she was something precious. The hairdryer hummed softly as he carefully ran his fingers through her damp hair, the warm air sweeping over her.
James stood there shirtless, water still clinging to his skin, drops sliding down over the hard lines of his stomach and disappearing out of sight. Emmy tilted her head, studying the side of his face as he focused on her hair. Her eyes drifted to his shoulder.
There was a clear bite mark. She knew exactly when she’d left it.
Her gaze slid lower, stopping near his collarbone, where a short, scabbed-over cut stood out against his skin. It wasn’t long, but it looked deep. She reached out, brushing her fingertips over the scar. “How did this happen?”
James’s hand paused, hairdryer still in his grip. He tensed. “It was an accident. Happened at work.”
Emmy frowned a little, but she didn’t push. Neither of them spoke for a while. The hairdryer was the only sound, a soft background noise as they lingered in the quiet, soaking up the rare peace between them.
Once her hair was dry, James turned off the dryer and looked down at her, his eyes deep and full of something so intense it made her heartbeat stutter. Emmy pulled herself back to the moment. “Can you put me down?”
He nodded and set her gently on the floor.
Wrapped in her towel, Emmy headed for the living room to grab some clothes, but the ones scattered on the floor were a lost cause, stained and messy. With a sigh, she turned and went to the walk-in closet.
The moment she opened the door, she stopped in her tracks.
