Abriella rushed to open the door. As soon as it swung open, she spotted Emmy, who had changed into different clothes, and right behind her was James, also in a fresh outfit.

It didn’t take Abriella long to figure out where the two of them had disappeared to for the past three hours. Her worried expression melted into a sly, teasing grin.

“Well, well, finally decided to come down? Get in here, both of you. The food’s about to go cold.”

Emmy shifted, a little uneasy under Abriella’s gaze, and looked away. “I just went upstairs to grab a few things.”

“Sure, sure,” Abriella said, dragging out her words on purpose. “Just picking up some stuff, huh? I totally believe you.” In her head, she was rolling her eyes. Three hours to get something? Who do you think you’re fooling?

Emmy caught the look on Abriella’s face and felt her ears burn. She glanced over at James. He seemed to get the message and handed the small case he was holding to the bodyguard at the door.

“This is for Ms. Lincoln, make sure it gets to her safely.”

“Yes, sir,” the bodyguard replied, taking the case with both hands.

Abriella shot Emmy a look as if to say, Well, I’ll be—there really was something to pick up. She hooked her arm through Emmy’s. “So you actually went to get something? It’s already dark outside. Not staying at Applewood Estate tonight?”

Emmy kept her tone even. “I’m staying at my mom’s place.”

She didn’t offer any more details, and Abriella could tell that whatever had gone on in those three hours, the real problem between Emmy and James still wasn’t fixed. That made her even more anxious.

During dinner, Abriella tried her best to play matchmaker, hoping to ease the tension.

“Emmy, you don’t even know. James set his sights on Applewood Estate ages ago. Said it’s quiet and the scenery’s great—perfect for your research.”
