Emmy lifted an eyebrow, giving Abriella a look that said, Calm down. Abriella slapped a stack of papers on the desk, took a big breath, and let the words tumble out so fast they almost tripped over each other.

“Turns out the real reason Ben married Claudia is because he’s been obsessed all this time! You probably won’t believe it, but when Ben was five, traffickers kidnapped him and took him up into the mountains. A little girl helped him escape, and he’s never forgotten her. Emmy kept her eyes on the stack of documents, listening in silence.

Abriella took a quick breath and pressed on. “You know how Ben actually found Claudia? Through your mom’s charity list! Teresa and Ben went to high school together. After graduation, Ben joined Sparrow Group, and Teresa’s always been big on charity work, right? Well, one time Ben wanted to donate to a mountain region and asked Teresa for advice. Abriella paused, dropping her voice like she was about to reveal a state secret. “Okay, get this. Claudia isn’t the real Claudia.”

Emmy’s eyebrow went up again, but she didn’t say a word.

“Her real name was Wild Girl. Seriously, that’s what everyone called her. She grew up in the village stealing chickens and getting into trouble, the kind of kid nobody wanted around. No parents, so people just called her Wild Girl. I’m not sure how she ended up as Claudia yet, but I swear, this part’s legit.”

Emmy tapped her fingers on the desk, thinking. “So when Ben found her, was she pretending to be Claudia?”

Abriella shook her head hard. “No way. When Ben found her, she was already going by Claudia. She got adopted by a farming family when she was about eight, and that’s when she started using the name.”

Abriella paused, then kept going. “And Claudia only got close to Teresa because Ben made it happen. Think about it. Teresa sponsored tons of people, and all that info was supposed to be confidential. How would some girl from the countryside manage to find her? Ben brought her up from the village and introduced her directly to Teresa. But then Sparrow Group hit a rough patch, and Ben had to go through with a business marriage for his family. That was the end of whatever they had. Claudia went abroad right after, and Ben… well, he went into politics.”
