Emmy made her announcement without hesitation. Krystina would be the next CEO of Starlight Corporation. The news landed like a bomb in the boardroom. A ripple of surprise passed through everyone. Some of the directors exchanged glances, their faces hard to read. Most had expected Emmy to bring in a seasoned CEO from outside the company. No one thought she’d hand over such a huge role to someone like Krystina—a woman fresh out of a divorce, whose name barely rang a bell in the business world.
But Emmy had spoken. This was her decision. At a moment like this, no one dared to challenge her outright.
As the meeting wrapped up, Emmy stood to leave, bodyguards close at her side. She was almost at the door when Juan rushed after her.
“Emmy!” His voice cracked, desperate. “Can we talk for a second?”
Before he could get closer, two bodyguards stepped in, their faces unreadable as they blocked his path.
One of them said, voice like ice, “Mr. Carter, you’re no longer president of Starlight Corporation.”
The meaning was obvious. He wasn’t allowed near Emmy anymore.
Juan’s face went pale, all the color draining away.
By the time Emmy got back to Moonlight Bay, night had settled in completely. She was so tired she didn’t even want to move. She lay on her side in bed, eyes half-closed, ready to pass out, when Lorraine came in with a bowl of bird’s nest soup.
“Ma’am, it’s time to put on your stretch mark oil.”
Emmy didn’t open her eyes, her voice soft and worn out. “Lorraine, can we skip it tonight? I’m exhausted. I just want to sleep.”
Lorraine set the bowl down, looking worried. “But ma’am, you’re already getting some faint stretch marks on your belly. If we keep up with the oil now, it’ll help stop them from spreading.”
Stretch marks? Emmy’s mind blanked out for a second, then snapped back, wide awake. She sat up suddenly and looked down at her belly, but from that angle she couldn’t see much.
She started to panic. Kicking off the covers, she rushed over to the full-length mirror and lifted her maternity dress.
There they were, just under her navel—thin, reddish lines. They looked like ugly little centipedes crawling across her once-smooth skin.
Emmy’s eyes filled with tears. Before she knew it, she was crying hard, her face hot and wet.
