His eyes were rimmed with red from too many sleepless nights, and a shadow of dark stubble covered his jaw. Emmy stared at him, frozen, for several seconds. It took her that long to realize she wasn’t dreaming. Then everything hit her at once. She couldn’t hold it in any longer. James picked up the glass of warm water that Lorraine must have brought in earlier and held it to her lips. “Drink some water first.”

After she took a few sips, he finally answered. “I climbed the wall and came in through the window.”

Emmy held the cup, her gaze lingering on the red in his eyes. “You’re not sleeping again, are you?” Her voice was full of worry.

“It’s just been busy,” James replied. He reached up and gently wiped away the tear at the corner of her eye. “Don’t worry about me.”
