Emmy’s first thought was that the bodyguards outside had messed up and let in some lunatic. Her heart nearly stopped. Then the figure landed lightly and stood up straight. In the pale glow of the moon, Emmy finally saw who it was. Not a rioter, but James, all in black, looking cool as ever.
Relief hit her so hard her knees nearly buckled. Her heart, which had been lodged in her throat, slammed back down into her chest and started pounding even harder. She exhaled shakily, and tears pricked at her eyes. “You scared me half to death!”
James strode over in a few quick steps and wrapped her in his arms, holding her tight. He gently patted her back, again and again, like he needed to reassure himself that she was really there. “I’ve been away from the Capital for a few days. The second I got back, I heard your project ran into trouble.”
His brow was furrowed, his voice low. “What happened? Why isn’t your team running PR yet?”
Emmy stayed in his arms a moment longer, soaking up his comfort. She squeezed him back, then finally let go, though she didn’t really want to. She looked up at him, noticing the exhaustion in his sharp eyes and the clean scent of fresh shower gel on his skin. He must have gone home to clean up before coming to her. The realization made her heart melt.
Taking a deep breath, Emmy spilled out her whole plan to him, every detail she’d been keeping to herself. James listened without interrupting, his gaze growing darker and deeper with every word. He was stunned. She had thought of everything. If this worked, the military could finally use Claudia as a lead to catch the big drug lord they’d been hunting for ages.
All at once, love burned hot and fierce in his eyes. He couldn’t hold back anymore. This woman was his, and he was hers. James cupped the back of her head, pulled her close, and kissed her hard. He only broke the kiss when Emmy was breathless, resting his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the darkness.
He looked into her shining eyes, his voice rough and raw. “Thank you, baby.”
Then he kissed her again, this time slower and softer, full of tenderness. His lips moved from hers to her neck, trailing lower, exploring every inch of her skin. He knew Emmy was risking everything—her own name and the whole reputation of Starlight Corporation—just to protect the military’s plan. Claudia was slippery, and the military had made no progress in months. Command was losing patience. James had just come back from the border, trying to fix this himself, never expecting Emmy would be the one to bring him hope.
James couldn’t describe the waves of love rolling through him. Every time he saw her, he loved her more. So much, he’d give her anything.
As his lips reached her rounded belly, Emmy suddenly tensed. Instinctively, she grabbed his head, stopping him. “Don’t…”
