Shelly froze.
She automatically reached for the file. The second she glanced at it, her face went ghostly pale.
Every detail was there. How she and Claudia had teamed up to stir up trouble online, targeting Emmy’s charity project. And because Jared himself had signed off on that project, everything had blown back on him, too.
Panic set in. “Honey, let me explain.” She grabbed Jared’s sleeve, her voice desperate. “That project was barely on the radar. It was third-tier support, practically irrelevant.”
“It’s Emmy. She used that project to get close to you, and now she thinks she can walk all over me.”
“Can you believe she wants a Nelson child growing up outside our family? I just wanted to put her in her place.”
“I even wanted James to see for himself. Someone like her isn’t worth his attention.”
Jared listened, his anger only building. He pulled his arm away from her grip.
“Stupid,” he snapped.
“All your scheming, all your backdoor tricks, and you ruined everything. My whole plan is wrecked because of you.”
“If you’d left it alone for just two more weeks, I could have moved that project up to the top priority list.”
“Now look what you’ve done. Do you even realize how badly you’ve messed up my work? My reputation is on the line, and you almost destroyed it.”
Shelly’s world tilted. She stepped back, shaking her head, barely able to process what he was saying.
“No... that project was nothing. How could it possibly make the top tier…”
Suddenly, she looked up at him, eyes wide with suspicion.
“Honey, don’t let her fool you. She’s good at wrapping men around her finger.”
“You know what she’s done to James? He’s completely lost because of her. She’s been ignoring him, and he’s still defending her no matter what.”
“All of you are falling for her sweet act.”
Jared looked at her, his face hardening. He closed his eyes, tired to the bone. When he opened them, his gaze was glacial.
“Mother was right,” he said quietly.
“Marrying you just to continue the family line was the biggest mistake I ever made.”
“This was all wrong from the start.”
“If you really had some blessed fate, you wouldn’t have given me twin boys. You would have given me the son and daughter our families wanted.”
“If it weren’t for everything James has suffered, I would have divorced you and sent you back to the Sullivan family a long time ago.”
