Jared stood at his desk, back to the door, the tension in the study thick enough to choke on. He didn’t even need to look at Shelly for her heart to start pounding in her chest. The air was heavy, pressing down on her, making it hard to breathe. She hesitated in the doorway, barely able to look at his silhouette.
She took a careful step forward. “Babe, you wanted to see me…”
Her words barely left her lips before Jared spun around. His face was set and stormy, eyes so cold they could have cut through stone, fixed right on her.
A sharp slap echoed through the room.
The impact sent Shelly crashing to the hard floor, her cheek burning, swelling up almost instantly. Stunned, she pressed her hand to her face, staring up at Jared, unable to believe what just happened.
He stood over her, eyes blazing, not a trace of mercy in them, only pure anger. “Shelly. Are you really trying to ruin my career? Will you only be happy when I’m kicked out of the cabinet?”
His voice was so loud it seemed to shake the walls. Shelly’s whole body trembled. “No… no, I swear, I didn’t—” Her voice shook, and the words barely made it out, thin and desperate.
“Didn’t?” Jared let out a bitter laugh and took a step closer. The energy coming off him was suffocating.
“The election is right around the corner, and you went behind my back, took my list of support projects, and handed it to Claudia. What the hell were you thinking?”
He raised his voice, his anger spilling over. “Claudia’s husband, Ben, is my rival. Are you really that clueless, or did you just forget?”
Shelly’s panic spiked. She rushed to explain, stumbling over her words. “But Ben… he’s already been pushed out by the cabinet. He can’t hurt your chances, I promise. I even checked, all the projects on that list are already finished. Giving her the list doesn’t mean anything anymore…”
Jared let out a cold, mocking laugh. “If it’s so useless, why did she work so hard to get it from you?”
