Jared kicked her hand away, hard enough that she nearly fell over.

“After all this, you still think your only mistake was hanging out with Claudia?”

He stood over her, looking down with nothing but disappointment and disgust in his eyes.

“You’re impossible.”

He checked his watch.

“I’ll give you ten minutes. Sign it yourself.”

“If you don’t, I’ll call your brother Trenton. He can come pick you up and take you home, since you’re so set on making a scene.”

Shelly just crumpled on the floor, shaking her head over and over.

No. She wouldn’t sign. She couldn’t. She’d always looked down on women who got divorced. There was no way she could let herself become one of them.

Ten minutes dragged on, feeling both painfully long and over in a flash.

Jared didn’t care. “I’ve already got the divorce papers ready. Once she signs, you both can leave.”

He hung up. He didn’t even look at Shelly, still sitting there like she’d forgotten how to move. He walked over and yanked her up.

He shoved a pen into her hand.

“No! Let me go! I won’t sign!”

Shelly fought him, screaming, sobbing, scratching at his hand until she drew blood.

But Jared barely noticed. He was stronger. Her resistance didn’t matter.

When the last letter was done, Shelly cried out, her voice raw and broken.
