James finally moved, turning around so slowly it was like time itself had slowed down. In the moonlight, his face looked carved from stone, every line cold and sharp, his eyes silent and impossibly deep.
He let out a low laugh. It was short, bitter, and twisted with all the things he couldn’t bring himself to say.
“All these years, Tyler and I together never quite had enough shares. Always just a little less than those two. Just a bit more and we could’ve taken back everything overseas, kicked them out of Nelson Corporation for good.”
“I spent six years chasing that tiny gap. Six years of planning and scheming.”
He lifted his eyes, looking past Steve and into the darkness beyond, like he was searching for something he’d lost.
“I even… went through with a flash marriage. I thought maybe I just wasn’t ruthless enough. Maybe I didn’t have enough tricks up my sleeve.”
His voice was rough, like it hurt just to speak.
“But I never imagined the person who kept me one step behind, the one who calculated everything so perfectly from the shadows…”
He swallowed, the truth heavy in the air.
“It was Grandma.”
Steve felt like something inside him cracked. Suddenly, it all made sense—why James looked so broken right now.
Mrs. Nelson, the sweet old lady everyone thought was harmless, had been the one controlling everything. She kept everyone in the family balanced, making sure no one had too much power. She’d done it to keep James from going down a path of revenge, counting every share, every move, to stop him before he could lose himself completely.
But she didn’t realize—or maybe she just didn’t care—that her way of “protecting” him hurt more than anything. For James, it was like taking a knife to the deepest scar he had.
No one really understood how much Jamie’s death had destroyed him. It was that pain, that need for revenge, that pushed him forward, dragged him through hell and back.
And now, the person he trusted most had been the one in his way all along. It felt like the world had fallen apart.
