Lorelei and the midwives sprang into action.
“Ma’am, focus on my voice.” Lorraine squeezed Emmy’s hand, her tone steady and calm. “Deep breath in… that’s it… now let it out slowly… again, breathe in…”
Emmy tried to keep up, but the pain was so sharp and raw that everything else faded away. It felt like her body was being torn apart. Her vision kept flickering, black at the edges. She bit down hard, tasting blood on her tongue.
Everyone in the delivery room was tense, every nerve stretched tight as they worked together to bring new life into the world.
No one noticed the phone tossed on the side table. Its screen lit up, went dark, lit up again. Messages flashed by, then James’s name appeared on an incoming call.
But Emmy was lost in her own private battle, pushed to the limits of pain and endurance. She didn’t hear the phone. She didn’t see the screen.
Time seemed to stand still. Emmy felt like she was being split in two. Just when she thought she couldn’t take it any longer, a sharp, clear cry cut through the tension in the room.
A baby’s cry.
“He’s here! It’s a little boy!” a midwife shouted, her voice bursting with joy.
Emmy’s whole body relaxed. Her eyelids felt impossibly heavy.
“There’s another one, ma’am!” Lorraine called, pulling Emmy back from the brink. “One more time. You can do it!”
Somehow, Emmy found a last scrap of strength. She pushed, following Lorraine’s words, willing herself through the pain.
A second cry rang out, softer this time. Emmy’s body finally gave out. Darkness closed in, and she slipped into unconsciousness.
A nurse quickly hung up an IV.
“She just fainted from exhaustion. Vitals are stable,” Lorelei said, relief in her voice after checking.
She left a nurse to watch over Emmy, then she and Lorraine each scooped up a tiny, freshly cleaned baby and gently placed them in the incubators before rolling them out of the room.
The doors slid open and everyone waiting outside rushed forward, faces tight with worry.
Lorelei pulled off her mask, allowing a rare smile.
“Congratulations. Boy and girl twins. Both babies and Emmy are safe.”
She paused, then added, “Emmy’s just worn out. We’ll keep her here for another hour, then she’ll be moved to the VIP room.”
“Twins!”
“Oh my God! That’s amazing!”
Abriella and Krystina threw their arms around each other, eyes shining with tears.
Everyone crowded around the incubators, peering at the two perfect little babies.
