The lab was ice cold, but Emmy still ended up strapped down to the exam table. Metal cuffs locked around her wrists and ankles, pinning her in place. She had fought so hard, clawing at Dean’s face until his skin was shredded. Only when someone jabbed her with a sedative did her strength slip away, her mind fading into darkness.
Two men in white lab coats walked over, each holding a silver briefcase. They set them on a side table, snapped them open, then turned to Dean. The one in front spoke up, his English smooth and casual.
“Mr. Sparrow, we have two different options here.” He pointed at the first case. “This one’s fast. Just one shot and it works right away, but the side effects are brutal. The memory block is unpredictable, and some people from our earlier trials… well, people with weak bodies woke up completely out of it. Like, totally brainless.”
Then he moved his hand to the other case. “This one’s safer. It takes three shots, ten days apart. Works gently, lets you erase whatever memory you want, permanently. But it costs more. A lot more. What you’ve paid so far isn’t even close.”
He glanced at Emmy, then back at Dean. “I can tell she means a lot to you, so… it’s your call.”
Dean didn’t hesitate. He looked at Emmy’s sleeping face, soft and pale. “How much more do you need?”
The man’s eyes glinted, just for a second. “Three hundred million per shot. This stuff is totally illegal. You’ve only covered enough for the first dose.”
Dean stepped to the bed, brushing Emmy’s cheek with his thumb, gentle like he was afraid she’d break. He spoke low, almost whispering, more to himself than anyone else.
“How could I ever let you turn into an idiot…”
He straightened, voice steady. “Give her the first shot. I’ll get you the rest of the money in three days.”
The lab coat guy grinned, clearly pleased. “Very generous, Mr. Sparrow. As you Americans say, congratulations in advance on getting the girl.”
They got to work. One of them brushed Emmy’s hair aside, revealing her scalp. The needle slid in, cold and clinical.
…
A month passed.
