Dean didn’t say a word.
A man with blond hair and piercing blue eyes, dressed in a crisp white lab coat, walked straight toward them. He greeted Dean with a warm handshake and spoke in a language that sounded smooth and quick, but Emmy couldn’t make sense of any of it. Dean replied with a polite smile, though his eyes never left Emmy. The man got the hint and handed Dean a folder. Dean glanced over the papers, signed his name, and then started pushing Emmy’s wheelchair further into the lab.
A terrifying thought exploded in Emmy’s mind. Was he really going to use her for some kind of experiment?
Panic shot through her. She tried to get up from the wheelchair, desperate to escape, but Dean’s hands pressed firmly on her shoulders, holding her down. His voice sounded gentle, but to Emmy, it might as well have come from the devil himself.
“Relax. It’ll be over soon.”
Emmy felt her heart drop.
“What are you doing? What do you want from me?”
The deeper they went, the more the lab came into focus. Emmy’s eyes darted from machine to machine, all of them cold and metallic, each one glinting under the harsh lights like monsters waiting to devour her.
Fear crawled up her spine and settled deep in her chest. She forgot about pride, forgot about everything except the need to get away. She grabbed Dean’s arm, her voice trembling and on the verge of tears.
“Dean, please, I don’t want to do this. Take me out of here. Please.”
She looked up at him, her face streaked with tears, begging.
“If you just take me away, I’ll forgive you. I swear I will… Please, just take me away.”
Dean looked down at her, and for a moment, Emmy thought she saw something break in his eyes. There was so much pain there, mixed with something wild and desperate. He leaned in close, his breath warm against her ear.
“But how can I believe anything you say now, Emmy?”
He brushed her tears away, his touch so soft it almost made her ache. He treated her like she was something precious, something fragile.
“Don’t worry,” he said quietly. “It’s just one shot. It’ll be over before you know it.”
“When you wake up, you’ll see the world is good. You’ll see I’m good too.”
