She sucked in air, desperate and shaky, like someone who had just broken through the surface after almost drowning.
It felt like she’d been trapped in a dream that lasted forever. Everything there was pitch black. She couldn’t see anything, just darkness pressing in all around her.
All she could hear was Dean’s voice, everywhere and nowhere, creeping in and wrapping around her like some kind of spell. He was crying, begging, calling out her name over and over again.
It was unbearable. So, so unbearable. She wanted it to stop. She wanted everything to stop, even if that meant dying. But she couldn’t. Not even her own mind would let her go. Dean’s presence was like a shackle, dragging her back every time she tried to slip away.
Then, suddenly, she heard him say he’d let her go.
Those words cracked her prison open. It was as if someone had finally handed her the key. She wanted to wake up. Maybe if she did, she could really get away from him for good.
Emmy pushed herself up, slow and unsteady. She’d been lying there so long that her whole body felt like wet sand—heavy, sore, too weak to move.
A sudden, sharp sting flared at her wrist. She looked down and saw a faint pink scar against her pale skin, the only mark left from the time she tried to end it all.
She let out a crooked, bitter little smile. Life under Dean’s watchful eye had made even dying impossible.
Right then, a loud crash broke the silence behind her.
Emmy froze and turned, her movements sluggish. Dean stood in the doorway, stiff as a statue. At his feet, the shards of a broken glass glittered on the floor.
“Emmy!”
He rushed over in three big steps, scooping her into a hug so tight she could barely breathe.
“Thank God… thank God,” he murmured, voice trembling. “You’re finally awake! Do you have any idea how scared I was? I thought… I thought I’d lost you…”
His arms were crushing her. She didn’t hug him back. With the little energy she had, Emmy pressed her hand against his chest, trying to push him away. She was weak, but she meant it.
“You said… you’d let me go…”
Her voice came out rough and barely there, scratchy like gravel. She could hardly hear herself, but Dean heard every word.
He went stiff, the joy on his face instantly wiped away. His arms slowly loosened. He looked down at her, pain and struggle flickering in his eyes.
