Emmy fought with everything she had, twisting and pulling, but Dean’s grip on her arm was iron. He wasn’t letting go.
“Emmy, just calm down…”
“No! I won’t!” Her voice shook as everything she’d been holding in finally exploded. All the lies, the feeling of being trapped, the way he tried to control her—it all came pouring out at once.
Without warning, she bit down hard on the back of his hand. She didn’t hold back. She kept her teeth locked in place until she tasted the sharp tang of blood on her tongue.
Dean grunted, brows knitting together in pain, but he didn’t pull away. Blood trickled from his hand, running down to her lips, but he barely even flinched. There was something dark and final in his eyes, a kind of cold decision.
With his free hand, Dean slipped something from his pocket. Emmy was too busy biting to notice, too caught up in her anger to see the tiny syringe between his fingers. He pressed the needle gently against her neck.
She felt a cold sting, just a quick pinch, almost like a bug bite. A moment later, everything started spinning. Her jaw loosened. Her body felt heavy, and then she was falling.
Dean caught her easily, cradling her limp body against his chest. He looked down at her, brushed the blood from her mouth with his injured hand, and sighed.
“Sorry,” he whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. His voice was soft, but it sent chills down her spine.
“I only let you go for your health. But did you really think I’d ever let you slip away? You’ll come back to me. You always do. I just need to know where you are.”
He lifted her in his arms and carried her to the sofa. After laying her down, he waved the medical team over.
“Start.”
A doctor stepped forward, silver case in hand. He popped it open, pulling out a syringe that held a tiny chip—no bigger than a sesame seed.
“Mr. Sparrow, this is the latest in tracking technology. Subdermal, runs off body heat, no charging required. The only way out is surgery,” the doctor explained.
Dean’s eyes didn’t leave Emmy. “Do it.”
