Valerie's POV
I was in the hidden library. The quiet was absolute, the only sound the soft rustle of ancient pages as I turned them.
The air smelled of old paper and dust, a scent that was starting to feel like home. The book in front of me was open to a diagram of swirling, golden energy.
I was trying to understand it. This power inside me. The book was full of warnings, talking about a 'great personal cost.' It was a puzzle I was determined to solve.
Then Kai's mind-link hit me.
It wasn't a message. It wasn't a voice. It was a sledgehammer made of pure panic that slammed into my mind.
It knocked the air right out of my lungs. The force of it was a physical thing, a tidal wave of raw, unfiltered agony and desperation.
I felt his terror like it was my own. It was suffocating.
Then, under that crushing wave of emotion, came the words.
It was a plea. Not a command. A powerful Alpha, the most powerful I had ever met, stripped of all his pride, begging for my help.
There was no hesitation. Not for a single heartbeat.
The politics, the stupid marriage contract, the games my family was playing—all of it turned to dust. None of it mattered.
A life was on the line. My healer's instinct, the very core of who I am, took over completely.
I was on my feet before the last echo of his plea faded. The ancient book was forgotten.
I turned and ran to a small, dark wood chest in the corner of the room. It wasn't filled with jewels, but with something far more precious.
