Kai's POV
The moment her eyes opened, I felt something in my chest finally unclench. I hadn't even realized how tight it had been. She was awake.
I watched her take in the room, her mind already working, already asking about others. I shut it down immediately. She was the only thing that mattered right now.
After I dismissed the nurse, I pulled my chair closer. I needed to be near her, to feel the reality of her being conscious.
"How do you feel?" I asked, the words feeling completely inadequate.
She took a slow breath. "Like I ran a marathon. Uphill." A small, wry smile touched her lips for a second, and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
The smile faded, and her expression turned serious. "What did the doctors say?"
I let out a short, harsh laugh that held no humor. "The doctors are useless. They said your magical energy is gone, and they have no idea how to fix it. They told me to just ‘wait and see'." I said the last words with pure contempt.
I looked her right in the eye. "They're wrong. We're not going to wait for anything."
I leaned forward, my voice a low, intense promise. "You are going to tell me what you need. You know more about this power than anyone. Is there a book in your family's library? A specific herb? A place you need to go?"
