Edwin let out a cold chuckle.

He’d always been the mellow one in the Garcia family, the guy with the easy smile and the steady nerves. Even when Tristan came down on him, he never complained. But right now, his laughter sounded bitter—almost warped.

“Edwin, come on,” Kay stepped in, trying to smooth things over. “Tristan’s not heartless, otherwise he wouldn’t have come to see Naomi. Don’t make things harder for him.”

Edwin’s expression turned icy. “This is my family’s business. Don’t need outsiders lecturing me.”

Kay’s face tightened. She clenched her fists and glared at him for a moment before scoffing.

“How’s it none of my business? Did you forget, Edwin? There’s still a lot left unresolved with Naomi. Now she suddenly collapses? I’d say that’s worth looking into.”

“Kay!” Edwin snapped, jaw tight.

“That’s enough!” Tristan cut in, his tone sharp as a knife. “Kay’s just making a reasonable point. It’s a little too convenient, don’t you think?”

Edwin stared at Tristan, lips parting in disbelief before he pressed them together in a hard line.

“Get out!” Sylvia shouted suddenly.

Kay flicked her hair over her shoulder and sneered. “Geez, what a temper. Anyone’d think you were some heiress or something.”

Sylvia glared right back, her patience gone. “And who are you, exactly? What are you to the Garcia family? Do we need a circus act jumping around, making things worse? If you didn’t get it the first time, I’ll make it even simpler.”

“Out!”

The whole hospital room fell silent.

Kay’s face was thunderous, and even Tristan looked embarrassed.

He raised his hand as if to hit Sylvia, but Lester stepped in, blocking him.

“Tristan, Reese and I already talked about it. We’re not going to make a fuss about the engagement party.”

“Yeah, seriously,” Reese jumped in quickly. “It was supposed to be a celebration. No point in making things ugly. I’ll cover the costs myself.”

Kay shot them a look. “Are you two out of your minds? You’re just going to let this slide?”
