Bianca put on a hurt expression. “Jasper’s busy, so he hasn’t had time to see me.”

“No matter how busy he is, he can’t just abandon his wife and child! That’s…”

A maid hurried over, interrupting Lauren. “Mr. Jasper is here!”

Both women’s eyes lit up. Lauren covered her mouth with a smile. “See? What did I just say? He’s here.”

Bianca’s face was also filled with anticipation. But when she saw Jasper, that anticipation turned to terror.

“Jasper, you’re finally here. Bianca’s been having a hard time with morning sickness. She’s been thinking of you.”

Lauren was completely bewildered. How had things turned out like this? “Jasper, has there been a misunderstanding? Let’s just talk about it. Don’t be rough. The bodyguards could hurt the baby.”

Bianca, still being shielded, had an idea of what was happening. Her fear spiked.

She swallowed, shrinking further behind Lauren. “Jasper,” she stammered, “what’s wrong?”

Seeing her innocent act, Jasper asked slowly, “Why were you the one there at the end?”

The question was completely out of context. Lauren was even more confused. “Jasper, what are you talking about?”

Bianca’s heart sank. She understood. Jasper had found out.

She suppressed her panic, trying to explain. “I… I went into the mountains to pick mushrooms and saw the cabin. I went inside to get out of the rain, and… and then you came.”

Four years ago, after his men found him, he had left first, worried the assassins would target anyone with him. He had intended to return. When his eyes had healed, he returned to the cabin and found Bianca there. He had naturally assumed she was the one who had saved him. That was the beginning of the entire mistake.

Jasper clenched his jaw, reining in his fury. He asked, word by word, “Why didn’t you deny it?”

She’d had countless opportunities to deny it over the years, but she never had. Instead, she had accepted his gratitude as her due. This score had to be settled.

Bianca knew she couldn’t talk her way out of this. Fortunately, she was prepared. Tears instantly welled in her eyes and began to fall.

She choked out, “Because I love you! I fell in love with you the first moment I saw you. I know I was despicable and shameless, but I couldn’t lie to my own heart. I’ve been so scared these past few years, terrified you’d abandon me if you knew the truth, so I didn’t dare say anything.”

Her gaze was full of devotion as she looked at him through her tears. Anyone else might have softened, but to Jasper, it was a heavy blow. He had been played for a fool.

“I hate lies more than anything.”

Of course Bianca knew! Wasn’t that why Tatiana had been tortured so horribly? “Jasper, I didn’t lie to you. I only hid it because I love you so much! Besides, you’re the one who found me. You were the one who assumed it!”
