She turned her head slightly, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “Hm?”
“Come here.”

As she approached him, her steps hesitant yet obedient, he gently took her hand. With a swift motion, he peeled off her delicate white glove, revealing her soft skin, and slid something cool onto her finger.
Her gaze dropped, and in that moment, her expression seemed on the verge of shattering.
It was a ring. A platinum band, simple in design yet imbued with an unspoken depth.
Jasper looked down at her, his heart racing, assuming her silence was a sign of surprise. A smile crept onto his lips. “Do you like it?”
She sniffled softly, the sound tugging at his heartstrings. When she looked up again, her face transformed into a flawless mask of composure. “Jasper, why… are you giving me a ring?”
His voice was steady, yet there was an earnestness that lingered in the air. “When you grow up, I’ll marry you. This is a betrothal gift.”
At those words, Tatiana’s long-buried heart stirred, a flicker of warmth igniting within her.
Jasper, it’s late. Far too late for dreams like these.
Beneath the shimmering aurora, he made a solemn promise, the weight of it pressing down on him for the first time. He waited anxiously, almost desperately, for her response. Even as he recognized that she might not fully grasp the gravity of his words, he stubbornly held onto hope.
Tatiana wrapped her arms around him, her smile radiant and unguarded. “Okay!”
A wave of relief washed over him, and he exhaled, feeling the tension leave his body. The light in her eyes captivated him, and he found himself leaning in slowly, his breath quickening, his mind a whirlwind of emotions.
Just as their lips were about to meet, Tatiana suddenly exclaimed, “Jasper! Look! Such bright stars!”
She pointed excitedly at the vast expanse of the night sky, effortlessly avoiding his kiss.
Jasper jolted back to reality, pressing his lips together in frustration, a surge of self-loathing washing over him.
She’s only seven. What could she possibly understand? I’m truly despicable.
He forced himself to suppress the overwhelming impulse, determined not to let it show.
Worried about her catching a cold, he didn’t linger under the stars for long. After a few moments, he gently led the reluctant Tatiana away, her small hand slipping from his grasp.

**Chapter 187: The Unanswered Call**
Once they returned home, it became evident that Tatiana was indeed unwell. Her cheeks were flushed, and she radiated warmth, a sign of the fever that had crept upon her.
Jasper’s expression darkened with concern, and he acted swiftly, calling for a doctor without hesitation.
Fortunately, the diagnosis was merely a chill, leading to a low fever. With adequate rest, she would likely bounce back.
Yet, guilt gnawed at him. He looked at the drowsy Tatiana, her small frame curled up under the covers, and his heart ached with worry. “Get well soon,” he whispered, though she was fast asleep and unaware of his words. After taking some pregnancy-safe medicine, she drifted deeper into slumber, her breathing steady but soft.
Jasper had planned to stay by her side, to watch over her as she rested, but fate had other plans. Suddenly, his phone buzzed with an urgent call.
There was trouble brewing within the Jackson family.
Time was of the essence; he needed to return immediately.
He hesitated, wanting desperately to take her with him, but as he looked at her flushed face and the exhaustion etched into her features, he couldn’t bear the thought. She was sick; the arduous journey would be too much for her. Yet, the matter back home was pressing and could not wait.
After wrestling with his thoughts, Jasper made the difficult decision to go back alone. He would travel through the night, hoping to return by the time she awoke.
