“Natalie!” Bursting into the deserted Scott Group building, I’d got the access code sent over for direct entry. I scoured each meeting room. Finally, in one with the lights on, there she was, curled up at the door, as white as a ghost.
“Natalie… What’s up with you?” I bent down, scooped her up. She was so light, huddled like a sick little puppy, soaked in cold sweat and burning up. I instantly called my private med team.
“Nah… Just… period cramps.” She cracked open her eyes, voice barely there. “No hospital, okay?”
My eyes landed on the stack of papers on the table and the glowing laptop. My anger flared— work again! Why the hell didn’t she take care of herself?
I tamped down the irritation, held her tighter, and strode out. Her hand clutched my waist.
“Hurting bad?” I asked, even though I knew. As I saw her in pain, a twinge hit me.
“Why don’t you look after yourself?” I said, a bit pissed.
“Sorry… Didn’t mean to bug you,” she murmured.
“Don’t be sorry,” I replied.
“You’re the only one I could call…” she mumbled, like a lost soul finding shelter.
Those words got to me. I softened my voice. “It’s okay you called.”
Outside, it was pouring. I’d rushed out without an umbrella. I wrapped my coat around her, used my back to block the rain, and sprinted to the car at the entrance. I got her settled in the warm backseat while I was soaked.
She conked out in the car. I called the servants at the estate to prep hot water, painkillers, and a room. Before she passed out, she mumbled about going home, but there was no way I’d let her
be alone.
Now, as I looked at her pale face, the anger faded, replaced by something more complex.
Back at the estate, the maids were ready. I laid her on the guest-room bed and let them take over. I myself waited outside until the doctor came, checked her, and gave her a shot.

“Mr. Sanchez, Ms. Anderson is exhausted and has bad period cramps. The shot will help. She needs rest. She’s weak, so she should get a full check-up later,” the doctor said.
“When will she wake up?” I asked, looking at her frowning face.
“The shot has a sedative. She’s so tired, she’ll sleep a while. Gotta watch her when she wakes,” the doctor replied.
Once I knew she was okay for now, I relaxed. Only then did I feel how wet I was. I was about to leave to change when I felt a tug on my pants.
It was her hand. She was still out, maybe having a nightmare. Her brows were furrowed, lips moving like she was mumbling.
“Mr. Sanchez, go change. We’ll take care of her,” a maid said softly.
I waved her off. “Leave.”
The room was quiet, just the sound of her breathing. Somehow, I bent down to hear what she was saying.
“Data… checking… deadline…” Her mutterings were disjointed, all revolving around the project and work. Even in this sorry state, her mind was still fixated on these things. A frown creased my forehead in irritation.
Just as I was about to straighten up, she slurred a few words, so softly it was almost a whisper, “Mr. Sanchez… thanks…”
Those words fluttered against my heart like a gentle feather, stirring something inside me. I gazed at her sleeping face for a moment. Then, I reached out, awkwardly pushing aside the damp strands of hair sticking to her cheek. After that, I gently pried her hand off my trouser leg and tucked it back under the warm covers.
I’d barely stepped into the adjoining room, peeled off my drenched shirt, and was about to step into a hot shower to thaw myself when faint whimpers and rustling sounds drifted from the guest room. My heart skipped a beat, and I dashed back in a flash.
