“Leonardo?” A startled cry escaped her lips as if she’d been seared by a hot iron. She back reflexively, teetering on the edge of the bed. Swift as lightning, I reached out and caught her arm. However, the force of inertia sent us both tumbling onto the plush mattress. I braced myself with my arms on either side of her, barely managing to avoid crushing her entirely.
Natalie’s eyes widened in shock, and her field of vision was filled with my bare chest and well- defined arm muscles. Her cheeks flamed red in an instant, and her breathing hitched and quickened.
“Mr. Sanchez! Sorry! I’m so sorry!” she babbled incoherently, scuttling towards the far side of the bed as if she wished to bury herself out of sight.
I shot up from the bed and turned my back to her, quickly shrugging on the damp shirt I’d discarded earlier to cover my torso. Then, in a voice tinged with a barely perceptible rasp, I calmly explained, “I got soaked. I was just about to take a shower. It wasn’t intentional.”
She bobbed her head up and down like a puppet on a string. “I get it! Seriously, thanks… for helping me out again.” Yet, her eyes still flitted about, as if she were still in a daze from the earlier shock.
I grunted, taking a moment to steady my breathing before resuming my usual composed tone. Then I said, “Don’t push yourself so hard next time. Your body’s your own, you know.”
“Okay,” she responded meekly. Noticing the warm water and pills placed on the bedside table, she grabbed them without hesitation and popped the pills into her mouth, washing them down with a gulp of water.
As I saw her take the medicine and appear to calm down, the last vestige of worry in my heart melted away.
“Mr. Sanchez… what’s the deal with the scar on your shoulder?” Natalie hesitated briefly but finally blurted out the question, her gaze fixed on the spot on my left shoulder that she’d accidentally touched earlier.
I turned my head slightly and absent-mindedly ran my fingers over the old scar. “There was an armed attack at an international business conference. I took a bullet in the left shoulder,” I said so casually, as if it were someone else’s story.
She gasped in surprise. “You’re really amazing,” she said sincerely.

“How so?” I turned to look at her, curious about her opinion.

“I just feel that… you seem so calm about everything, work, relationships… even such a serious injury. I can’t do that. I’m a wimp when it comes to pain, and I hold grudges. If I got hurt like that, I’d never forget it.” Her eyes were clear, full of genuine admiration.
A wimp about pain and holding grudges? It really fit her personality. I was silent for a moment, still feeling the bump of the scar under my fingertips.
“If you’re afraid of pain, don’t be so stubborn.” I looked at her, my voice softer than usual. “After our arranged marriage, I’ll take care of you.”
As the words left my mouth, I was a bit taken aback myself. It wasn’t just out of duty or the deal. She looked at me, her eyes flickering for a moment before she gave a faint, complex smile. “Okay.”
Upon returning to my room, I promptly took a shower.
After stepping out of the bathroom, the sight of the fading scar in the mirror transported my thoughts back two years.
That year, during a commerce gathering, the building went up in an explosion. Trapped in the rubble were a middle-aged werewolf and me, awaiting rescue.
A silver bullet had pierced my shoulder, and I was hemorrhaging badly. I was on the verge of collapse when the werewolf came to my aid. He stopped the bleeding and bandaged me up, then hoisted me onto his back to search for an exit.
At first, I insisted he leave me behind. I didn’t want to be a dead weight.
But the werewolf was having none of it. He just kept urging me to stay strong.
Just before we were finally saved, he confided that he’d lived childless and felt he’d lived his full life. He believed the young should have a shot at survival if things went south.
By helping me, he hoped to make up for the fatherhood he’d never known.
After the rescue, the werewolf vanished without a trace. We never saw each other again.
It was only when news broke of Alexander, the Alpha of Moon-Shadowed Pack, passing away that I realized he was the one who’d saved me.
I then had someone dig into Moon-Shadowed Pack’s situation, hoping to repay his life-saving
act.
