By the time I wrapped up my work at the office, it was well past nine. Then came a call from the front desk saying Roger and Fiona were still loitering outside. My heart sank. As I glanced out the window, there was that stretched-out limo.

“Why are they still waiting…” I whispered. They were old and had traveled far. Without a second thought for my coat, I grabbed my files and bolted downstairs.

Fiona stepped out of the car and looped her arm through mine. “Ms. Anderson, you haven’t eaten, right? We brought food.” She motioned for the assistant to hand over a fancy multi- tiered lunchbox, a seven-layer beauty. “What a pity… It’s gone cold.”

“Mrs. Santos…” As I saw how much they’d gone out of their way for me, my voice wavered. This feeling of being fussed over by elders? It was foreign to me, something I’d never known from my own kin. So this was what it was like to be loved by family?

They were so worried about interrupting my work that they even suggested I heat the food back at the office or that they order a fresh batch. I couldn’t say no to such sweet, cautious

kindness.

“You all haven’t eaten, either, have you? There’s plenty for all three of us. Let’s eat together,” I asked, concern lacing my voice.

I gave the driver my home address on the spot. “My place is just a stone’s throw away. We’ll heat this up at my place and have a proper meal… Oh, and if you wanna crash at my place tonight, you’re more than welcome. I’ve got my work with me, so I can work from home and shoot the breeze with you.”

I could tell they were itching to spend more time with me. Their loneliness hit close to home. For werewolves, family ties were important, and it was probably even tougher on the older ones. I was happy to be in the good books of these two lovely seniors.

At my words, their eyes lit

up

like Christmas trees, and they nodded eagerly.

Leonardo’s POV:

After a grueling all-day meeting on the pack border dispute, just as I was about to catch a break, Aaron dropped a message: my grandparents had snuck back from the pack’s overseas territory and headed straight for Moon-Shadowed Pack.

I massaged my temples, instantly clued in to their game. I dialed Natalie’s number.

“Hello? Mr. Sanchez?” Her voice came through, with faint clinking of utensils in the background.

“Did two old folks come to see you today?” I got straight to the point.

“Yeah… How’d you know?” She sounded taken aback.

“Any idea where they are now?” I pressed.

There was a brief pause on the other end. Then her hesitant voice came through. “They are… We split up.” She was fibbing. I could just imagine those two old scamps beside her, waving their hands like crazy.

I didn’t call her out and hung up. Looked like I’d have to pay a visit myself.

Natalie’s POV:

The call with Leonardo ended just a moment ago. Opposite me sat Roger and Fiona, straight- backed with shifty eyes. In a flash, an idea popped into my head.

I stared at the old couple, especially Roger. The shape of his face and the look in his eyes were incredibly similar to Leonardo’s. And the surname! Santos? Sanchez!

“You two… Are you Leonardo’s grandparents, by any chance?” I exclaimed, finally catching on.

“Ms. Anderson, no messing around. We’re indeed Leonardo’s grandparents,” Fiona said with a touch of embarrassment.

They laid it all out. They’d come to arrange an engagement ceremony for me and Leonardo. The place was booked at the Seven-Star Crown Hotel, set for eight o’clock tomorrow evening.

It was a hasty arrangement, so not many guests would be invited. But all the necessary fanfare and formalities would be there. Folks from Silver-Maned Pack would be in attendance tomorrow night, and Moon-Shadowed Pack had likely just gotten the invitation.

They’d been super secretive and worked hard to keep it quiet, all to prevent Leonardo from stopping it.

“My grandson is a great kid, but he’s just not into this kind of thing… He almost got engaged once before, but…” Fiona left the sentence hanging.

She continued, “Anyway, with us here, we won’t let you down. Natalie, don’t worry. Leonardo’s a filial boy. When he can’t find us tomorrow night, he’ll definitely show up!”

Once the engagement was out of the way, the rest of the process would go smoothly.
