The manager presented the gift boxes to me with both hands, his attitude deferential. “Ms. Anderson, these are from Sir Sanchez and Madam Sanchez. The dress and matching jewelry you tried on this afternoon have been adjusted to your size.”

I stood there, stunned. “For me?” Glancing at the tag, I saw my size clearly marked along with the style number of that white mermaid-style dress. It was the one Fiona had immediately fallen in love with when I tried it on this afternoon.

As I recalled Fiona’s reason for asking me to try on the clothes-helping pick out something for her grandson’s fiancée-it dawned on me that those dresses and jewelry had been intended for me all along.

I took the box and shut the door. Just as I placed it on the table, my phone in my pocket buzzed. It was Leonardo. And at the very same moment, the doorbell rang, sending my heart into a frenzy. Peering through the peephole, I saw Leonardo standing right outside, phone in hand.

“Open up. I know they’re in there.” His cold voice came through, both from the phone and muffled by the door.

I steeled myself and opened the door. Leonardo stood there, radiating an icy chill. Even when he tried to rein it in, the invisible pressure made the air seem to still.

“Mr. Sanchez, I didn’t mean to deceive you…” My voice quivered ever so slightly. I just didn’t know how to deal with the pleading looks of the two elders and Leonardo’s current anger.

“Had your fun and seen her?” Leonardo’s eyes bypassed me and landed on Roger and Fiona sitting upright in the dining room. His tone was flat, but it hit harder than any scolding.

“Leon…” Fiona looked like a chastened child, not daring to meet his eyes.

Roger quickly averted his gaze. “Don’t look at me. I was dragged here by your grandma!” He tried to distance himself, but under his grandson’s stare, his bravado melted away.

“Let me guess.” Leonardo’s side-eye made me press my lips together nervously. “I’m the last one to find out about the engagement party, right?”

“How’d you know…” Fiona blurted out, then clapped a hand over her mouth, realizing her slip-

“I know what you’re up to,” Leonardo said, a hint of helplessness at his grandparents’ hasty move and a touch of unwavering authority in his voice. “You really think you can keep a low- profile on a big deal like this?”

In the werewolf world, a family of their standing was constantly under the spotlight. Any tiny change in their affairs caught the eye of the nosy. And an engagement ceremony for a pack’s future leader? It was like a neon sign in the dark, impossible to miss.

He turned to his grandparents. “You’ve had a long day. Come home with me and get some

rest.”

“Leonardo!” I called out instinctively, worried he’d say something harsher to them.

When Leonardo turned around, the frost on his face had thawed a bit. “Don’t worry. I’m not mad at you. I’m just ticked that they showed up without telling me and rushed this whole thing,” he said, sensing my unease.

I let out a sigh of relief and spoke up for Roger and Fiona, “They’re doing it for us. Maybe it’s not so bad to get things sorted out earlier…” Even as the words left my mouth, I was surprised at myself. It seemed I wasn’t opposed to the idea after all.

Leonardo swallowed hard. He looked at me with a more intense gaze. “I know you’re looking out for them. The engagement was on my to-do list anyway. I just didn’t expect it to be so rushed, and I should’ve talked to you first instead of leaving you in the dark.”

Like a gentle warm breeze, his words dispelled the last trace of unease lingering in my heart. It turned out he wasn’t resistant; Leonardo just hated being pushed into things. This sense of being respected and involved in the plans felt amazing.

Once again, Leonardo shifted his gaze to his grandparents. In a composed tone, he said, “Hop in the car. I’ll drive you home.”

Then, he faced me and said, “After I get them settled, I’ll give you a ring later. Let’s iron out the details of tomorrow’s ceremony. If there’s anything that doesn’t sit right with you or you wanna tweak, just let me know.”
