As I turned around, there she was-Victoria, Leonardo’s childhood sweetheart with whom he’d shared a dance at the recent dinner gala. Clad in a resplendent light-blue evening gown, she exuded her signature cool allure. Yet, the telltale signs of heavy drinking were evident: rosy cheeks and glassy, unfocused eyes. The air around her was thick with Omega pheromones, laced with profound sorrow and unspoken resentment.
“What are you doing here, Victoria?” Leonardo’s tone dropped, a subtle edge of warning creeping in.
“Engaged, are you? There’s no way I’d miss out on congratulating you,” Victoria quipped, raising her glass. Her eyes flitted over me, sizing me up in a split second. With a bittersweet smile, she drawled, “Ms. Anderson, you’re a real looker. No wonder Leonardo picked you as his fiancée. You two seem like a made-in-heaven couple.” The envy in her voice was hard to miss.
“Thanks, Ms. Thompson. You’re looking lovely, too,” I replied, keeping my poise. It was crystal clear that Victoria’s feelings for Leonardo ran deeper than mere friendship.
“Beauty’s just skin-deep, isn’t it?” Victoria’s voice grew hushed, her gaze fixed on Leonardo. Her eyes welled up as she murmured, “Life’s a real bummer sometimes. You either meet the right person at the wrong time or the wrong one at the right time.” Her voice cracked a bit as she locked eyes with Leonardo again.
I was a bit lost, but my friends at the table were like sharks smelling blood. Their faces were tense, brimming with curiosity.
The atmosphere around the table turned frosty. All eyes landed on Leonardo.
“Victoria, you’ve had too much,” Leonardo stated flatly. He motioned to Aaron and ordered, “Get Ms. Thompson home.”
Aaron nodded promptly and moved to assist Victoria, but she brushed him off. Stumbling towards Leonardo, she pleaded, “Come on, we go way back. One last drink, and I’ll be out of your girl’s hair for good.”
Leonardo wordlessly grabbed his glass and downed the contents in one go, not even sparing her a second glance. Victoria’s tears spilled over immediately. “Fine, Leonardo. I won’t bother you ever again,” she choked out. Closing her eyes, she tossed back her drink. As she put the glass down, her knees buckled, and she lunged towards Leonardo.
But Leonardo nimbly sidestepped, quick as a flash. Aaron, who’d been on standby, caught her

Victoria was clearly taken aback by his cold-heartedness. Her face went as white as a sheet.
“Ms. Thompson, you’re in no state to be on your own. I’ll see you back to your place,” Aaron said, his tone polite but firm.
Victoria stared at Leonardo’s stony profile for a moment. In the end, she said nothing, pushed Aaron aside, and staggered out of the room.
The mood at the table hit rock bottom. Everyone, including me, was staring at Leonardo.
But he just tapped the table nonchalantly and said, “Dig in, guys. Don’t be shy.”
The guests all chimed in, “Sure thing.”
“Thanks, Mr. Sanchez.”
Despite their burning curiosity, no one dared to pry further under Leonardo’s intimidating
gaze.
After a brief moment of indecision, I finally murmured, “Mr. Sanchez, given what Ms. Thompson just pulled off, are you sure you don’t wanna go check on her?”
I remembered Liam once mentioned that Victoria hailed from an ancient werewolf pack, always composed and well-behaved. Her loss of control must’ve meant she was in excruciating pain.
Leonardo turned his gaze to me, his voice now much mellower. “This is our engagement bash, and you’re the main attraction here.” He paused, then enunciated clearly in a low tone, “Aaron’ll get her home safe and sound. No point in letting an outsider throw a wrench in our engagement plans.”
“Look, I’m your fiancé. Bailing on you to chase after another woman on our engagement day? That’s just plain disrespectful. It won’t happen,” he continued, locking his eyes on mine.
Victoria’s little outburst had reignited the sense of detachment I felt towards this arranged marriage. But Leonardo’s blunt yet reassuring words were like a gentle caress, dispelling the chill in my heart. He made it crystal clear that I came before Victoria, standing up for my dignity as his fiancée.
His actions stirred my still heart. It dawned on me that even in this seemingly business- oriented marriage, he was willing to treat me with the respect I deserved.
Eventually, the engagement party wound down. Fiona and Roger were so loath to see me go
