I didn’t give him a chance. Instead, my eyes landed on Aaliyah’s shopping bags scattered on the floor. “Ms. Cooper, you really went on a shopping spree today. That must have set someone back a pretty penny. Landon didn’t mention this big-ticket spending to me. After all, as his mate, the money he spends is our joint wallet, you know?”
I made sure to put extra emphasis on “mate” and “joint wallet”.
Aaliyah was fuming, her body shaking with anger. “Natalie, you’re being…” she almost shrieked.
Landon was quick on his feet. He snatched up the shopping bags from the floor and thrust them into my hands. “Natalie, you’ve got it all wrong! These are for clients. I haven’t even gotten a gift for Ms. Cooper yet. If you’re not okay with it, I’ll skip it. Ms. Cooper won’t care. Don’t be such a sourpuss. Are you seriously jealous of her?” He tried to play it off with a faux- helpless and loving smile.
I watched his pitiful act and then looked at the flashy yellow diamond bracelet still on Aaliyah’s wrist. I let out a little laugh. “Is that bracelet for a client, too?”
“Sure is! Just had Ms. Cooper try it on,” Landon said without missing a beat. He promptly removed the bracelet and stuffed it back into the bag.
Aaliyah’s face went pale as a ghost, and her eyes welled up with tears. Seeing her like that, I scoffed, “Landon, if you’re picking gifts for clients, getting a former employee to help you out? That’s crossing the company’s line, isn’t it?”
“Well, she was just trying to be helpful,” Landon mumbled. Then, as if mustering up his courage, he handed me all the shopping bags. “You’re right, Natalie. I was inconsiderate. You pick the gifts.”
Aaliyah watched as Landon gave away what was supposed to be hers. The tears finally spilled over. She bit her lip hard, turned away, and her shoulders started to shake.
Looking at these so-called “gifts” that were meant for Aaliyah, I felt nothing but a wave of disgust. I casually passed the expensive shopping bags to the salesgirl who had been serving me and was now standing there, eyes wide open in shock.
“If it were up to me, I’d never pick such tacky stuff. It makes Thorn Pack look like we have no class,” I said coolly.
Then, turning to the salesgirl, I added, my voice dripping with disdain, “My mate bought these.

They’re not up to par. Consider them a gift from me.”
The salesgirl was stunned. “Oh, miss, this is way too much. I can’t take it.”

I cut her off, shooting a pointed look at Landon and Aaliyah-who had her back turned, dabbing tears. “Take it. My mate’s rolling in dough, and he gives ‘his friend’ stuff like this. You saw that just now, right?”
“Well, then I’ll take it… Thanks a million!” The salesgirl was over the moon and looked at me with admiration. Having witnessed our whole conversation, she probably got the gist of the situation among the three of us.
Landon watched me casually give away luxury items worth millions of dollars, and his lips twitched in pain. “Natalie, what on earth are you doing?”
“Landon, I’m doing this for your own good.” I turned, flashing a bright yet cold smile. “Or do you want your dad to know you brought an ‘outsider’ and used the pack’s funds to pick out pricey gifts?”
Right away, he clammed up, his face turning deathly pale as he forced himself to hold back his
anger.
My actions had Aaliyah seeing red. With Landon’s “betrayal” on top of it, she was shaking with rage, tears pouring down her cheeks. But she bit her tongue and kept her mouth shut.
Landon caught sight of her state, and a glimmer of pity flashed in his eyes. Just as he was about to head over to her, I called him over to the counter. The salesgirl, who’d just hit the jackpot, was all over us. She pulled out the store’s star item-a pair of high-end, custom-made turquoise cufflinks. They were tagged at 1.98 million dollars and would take three months to make.
“Natalie, this is way over the top. Let’s go for something else,” Landon pleaded.
I said, not even looking up from the tablet, “Didn’t you tell me to pick? What I picked is only a bit more expensive than what Ms. Cooper got, but it’s a whole different league in terms of style. This is a brand the royals love. It’ll seal the deal with any client.”
The salesgirl was quick to back me up.
Landon had no other option. Figuring he could sort it out later since it was custom-made, he gritted his teeth and swiped his card.
