I stood there, stunned. Before I could fully fathom the profound meaning behind his words, Leonardo’s voice, low and laced with an unfamiliar, almost pleading undertone, reached my
ears.
“Natalie, I want to see you,” he murmured.
His breathing grew ragged, and it felt as if his searing breath could drift through the screen and brush against my ear and neck. For that brief moment, Leonardo yearned desperately for me to be right beside him. No words, no grand gestures—just silent companionship.
This overwhelming longing was clearly foreign to him, leaving him a bit disoriented.
“Mr. Sanchez, where are you?” I blurted out before I could stop myself.
“I’m at Silvermist Fortress in the Northern Reaches… Ahem…” His voice faltered as a fit of coughing seized him. After regaining his composure, he continued, “Your concern… means the world to me. Don’t worry, it’s nothing serious. I’ve taken my meds. It’s late. You should get some sleep… wait for me to come home.”
It was rare for Leonardo to be so talkative. He was clearly trying to put my mind at ease. That soft “wait for me to come home” sent a shiver down my spine.
I nodded wordlessly, not wanting to disturb him further, and ended the call.
The night was thick, but sleep evaded me. The thought of him alone in that remote fortress, battling illness while juggling a mountain of work, was unbearable. I couldn’t rest knowing he might not even have a warm meal.
So, I reached out to Aaron. And what I learned shattered my heart. Leonardo hadn’t just caught a cold; he’d pushed himself to the brink dealing with a mining disaster, and now he was down with a fever. But true to his stubborn self, he refused to take a break.
A wild idea took hold of me-I had to go to him.
With my experience in the mining industry, I could lighten his load and give him a chance to recover. Once the thought took root, there was no turning back. I quickly wrapped up my business at Moon-Shadowed Pack and hopped on a private jet bound for the Northern Reaches as dawn was still a distant promise.

After ending the call, the long-suppressed coughing fit erupted again, nearly emptying the air from my lungs. Aaron rushed in with a dose of medicine in hand. “Mr. Sanchez, you really should let the pack doctor take a look at you,” he urged.
I waved him off. The mining accident was a huge deal. Every single day of delay meant incalculable losses. As the leader of Silver-Maned Pack, I couldn’t afford to break down at this
critical moment.
After taking the medicine, the burning pain in my throat subsided a bit. But Natalie’s words, “It’ll break my heart,” kept echoing in my mind. The concern in her voice was so genuine, unlike the looks of fear or reverence from others. It was pure, heartfelt care. This feeling was strange, yet not unpleasant. It even made a cold, hard corner of my heart start to thaw.
Whether it was the medicine or the relaxation of my mind, a wave of exhaustion hit me hard. Before I knew it, I passed out right in my study.

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself in my bedroom. There was a cooling gel patch on my forehead, and my clothes had been changed. Although I was still soaked in sweat, the heavy feeling had lessened.
“Aaron…” I croaked, my throat still raw and dry. I remembered being in the study last night.
A voice called out, “Mr. Sanchez!”
Just as I was about to throw off the covers and get out of bed, a figure that had no business being here came into my line of sight. I squinted, wondering if it was a fever-induced hallucination.
“Natalie?” I murmured.
“It’s me. Your fever just went down. Don’t move around,” she said, carrying a bowl of minced meat soup-light with a grainy aroma-over to the bedside. She put the bowl down and then, without any argument, grabbed my arm and tried to push me back onto the bed.
I instinctively resisted a bit. Her strength was nothing compared to an Alpha’s. During the tug- of-war, with a little force, I easily pulled her soft body into my arms.
Natalie was like a startled deer, lying on my chest. Our eyes met. There were probably still bloodshot eyes and a sickly exhaustion in my gaze, while hers were as bright as the purest stars in the night sky, with a rosy blush on her cheeks.
