Fiona’s words flowed like a gentle stream of warmth, thawing the icy corners of my heart that had been sealed by past experiences. She felt like a true, blood-bound grandmother, drawing out an irresistible urge in me to seek her comfort. Without hesitation, I wrapped my arms around her, my eyes growing moist.
She cooed, patting my back tenderly with a loving smile, “Darling, how about I give that fella a video call?”
I was caught off guard. “Well…”
Fiona said gently, “I could tell you lost your appetite after we talked about him at dinner. No need to put on a brave face with me. It’s only natural to fret about your mate, especially when you’re on the verge of the Moon Goddess’ vow ceremony. Caring for each other is just part of being future mates, right?” The mention of “mate” sent a rush of heat to my cheeks.
I sat up straight right away, shyly averting my gaze. “I’m just worried that Mr. Sanchez is pushing himself too hard and it’ll take a toll on his health.”
“Alright, alright. No more teasing. I’ll ring him up.” With that, Fiona whipped out her phone and dialed Leonardo’s number for a video call, not waiting for my approval.
The ringing tone set me on edge, and I quickly fussed over my skirt and hair.
It seemed an eternity before the call connected. Leonardo’s deep voice, rough and off-key, crackled through the speaker. “Grandma. What’s up so late?”
He didn’t just sound hoarse-there was a thick nasal twang, and his breath was heavy.
“Leon, you don’t look well. Your face is as white as a sheet.” Fiona observed, eyes fixed on the screen. I forgot all about being proper and leaned in to peek at the screen beside her.
On the screen, Leonardo was slumped in his chair, his six-foot-plus frame looking uncharacteristically frail. His face was deathly pale. He covered his mouth with one hand and let out a few stifled coughs, his broad shoulders shaking slightly. When his eyes landed on me, those deep eyes flickered for a split second. He tried to sit up, but it only set off a more violent fit of coughing.
“Mr. Sanchez, are you okay?” I’d never seen him so vulnerable. It felt like a vise was tightening around my heart.

Fiona quickly jumped in to explain, “I had Natalie over for dinner today. She heard about what happened to you and has been worried sick. Look, you always keep things to yourself when you’re busy. You’re engaged now. Natalie’s your future mate. Don’t leave her hanging, okay?” Despite her concern for her grandson, she couldn’t resist scolding him a bit.
“What are you doing… Ahem…” Leonardo clearly hadn’t expected to see me. At first, he was miffed at Fiona’s meddling. But when he heard I’d been worried and saw me staring at the screen with teary eyes, his annoyance melted away. His eyes softened, and he fell silent, a faint blush creeping across his pale cheeks.
I knew Alphas like him. They hated showing weakness, especially in front of their future mates. Being in control was their thing, and they saw illness as a sign of failure.
I studied his face on the screen, my voice laced with concern. “Mr. Sanchez, are you running a fever? Your face is all flushed.”
“I’m fine. Just a little under the weather,” Leonardo replied, trying to sound composed, but avoiding my eyes.
“Have you seen the pack doctor?” I persisted.
Fiona, though worried, clearly didn’t want to intrude. She quietly passed me the phone and got up, leading the servants out of the living room.
With the sudden silence, my stream of concerned questions seemed to be getting to Leonardo.
Suddenly, Leonardo’s voice took on a firmer edge, the authoritative tone of an Alpha, though weakened by his illness. “I’m seriously fine, Natalie.”
The way he said my name made my heart skip a beat. I instantly felt I might have been prying too deeply and crossed the line.
