She didn't recognize this devastatingly handsome man, but medical records were private. What kind of stranger goes digging into something like that?
The man opened his car door. “How about we make a deal?”
Lillian replied, “Sorry, not interested.”
The man smiled faintly. “Then I could send this information to the Mercer and Blake families. Let them have a chance to pity you.”
In the past, if she got sick, she would have told her family immediately. But now, she never wanted them to know. And she certainly didn’t want their pity. The word felt like a knife twisting in her gut.
Lillian got into the car without another word.
The interior smelled of a subtle, woody fragrance—distinct but not overpowering, perfectly balanced. But she was in no mood to appreciate it.
“What do you want?”
All she really had of value was Li Algorithm. While few people knew she was the developer, the secret wasn't perfectly kept. She guessed he was after that.
But what the man said next was far beyond her expectations.
He calmly handed her a check. “I’ve looked into your situation. Ten million dollars for your voluntary kidney donation after you die.”
Lillian blinked. “What?”
The man raised an eyebrow. “You’re dying, aren’t you?”
Lillian’s eyes fell to the check. It was indeed for ten million dollars.
Incredibly... generous.
Too bad...
Lillian flicked the check with a long, slender finger, a confident and gracious smile on her face. “It seems your investigation didn’t include my bank account balance.”
The man’s eyes immediately sharpened with curiosity and scrutiny.
“Also, the doctors haven’t written me off yet. For all you know, I might have a miraculous recovery. You should probably take your ten million and go wait in a hospital line.”
With that, Lillian moved to get out of the car.
But the man grabbed her hand. “My name is Leonard Prescott. Out of the billions of people in this country, you and I are a match. We’ll be seeing each other again.”
Lillian’s gaze dropped to Leonard’s well-defined hand. The man took the hint and released her.
