Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 21

Sebastian stared at Lillian. He had never heard her speak to him like this.

The Lillian who had pursued him was passionate and, as a Mercer heiress, proud.

But most of the time, her words were exceptionally gentle.

The Lillian before him now was sharp-tongued and fiercely combative. Sebastian looked at her as if she were a stranger.

Could prison have changed her this much?

Sebastian had been about to let it go, but behind him, Sabrina's sobs grew louder, and Bella continued to comfort her.

Sebastian's cold gaze fell on Lillian. “Is this the upbringing of a Mercer family lady?”

Lillian scoffed. “Haha, what kind of upbringing does the Mercer family offer? A cheating father, a mother who lost her mind, brothers blinded by greed, and a grandmother in a coma, thanks to certain people.”

Sebastian retorted, “So it’s true. All that sweetness was just an act to get me.”

Lillian looked at Sebastian with cold indifference, as if she had never known this man.

The man she had once seen as a paragon of virtue, a man of integrity, was, in reality, just this.

Truly, disappointingly ordinary.

Lillian glanced at the bed. Throughout the entire ordeal, Noah had been looking at her with a clear expression of disgust.

It was as if her very existence as his mother was an embarrassment to him.

Lillian didn't dwell on it. Coming here today had been a mistake.

A son who had turned against her was even more heartbreaking than a husband who had.

She left the room and went next door to her grandmother's.

Compared to the commotion in Noah's room, her grandmother's was eerily quiet.

The old woman lay in bed, kept alive only by the tubes and machines connected to her body.

At her age, Lillian wondered if she would ever have a chance to wake up.

Here, no one despised her, no one misunderstood her.

After her mother's breakdown, her grandmother was the only one who would listen to her.

She would make delicious food and bring it to Lillian’s workshop on weekends. When Lillian developed the Li Algorithm, her grandmother had celebrated with genuine joy.

And when Lillian left her own company to help Sebastian with his startup, her grandmother had advised her that even in love and marriage, a woman should have her own career and not revolve her life around a man.

“Grandma, it's my fault. I didn't listen to you. I was so blinded by love, so caught up in the sweetness of the moment. I didn't realize that beneath that sweet exterior was just a pile of crap, and I ended up hurting you.

Grandma, please open your eyes and look at me. Hit me. It’s all my fault.

As long as you wake up, I’ll take any punishment you give me.”

All the grief and injustice of the past two years washed over her like a tidal wave.

Lillian took her grandmother’s hand and pressed it against her own cheek.

But tragically, the old woman remained unresponsive.
