Lillian stopped and turned to face Martin.
His anger flared, and he began to rail at her. “You haven’t called me ‘Dad’ once since you got out of prison. This family has prepared so much for you. Sabrina even cooked for you personally. They knelt before you because they were afraid you’d blame them for moving in these past two years. No matter what, she is with me, which makes her your elder. You show no respect, and now when the family asks for one small favor, you refuse. Are you not a member of this family? Do our affairs have nothing to do with you? Lillian, how did I raise such a monster? Your two brothers, Sabrina, and Bella—aren’t they all working tirelessly for this family? How dare you sit back and enjoy the benefits without contributing anything?”
Though his words were a barrage of attacks, by the end, Lillian couldn’t help but laugh.
“Enjoying the benefits? Every penny you spent on me before I was an adult was your legal responsibility. After I turned eighteen, I don’t believe I ever took money from this family. The shares and money you gave me after my eighteenth birthday—haven’t I returned it all? Not a cent was touched. If you think the accounting is unclear, you can hire a professional to verify it.”
Lillian’s words were firm, and they made Martin’s blood boil.
He pointed a trembling finger at her, so angry he could barely speak. “You... you... how dare you. You say you didn’t spend my money after you turned eighteen, so whose money did you spend? If it weren’t for your wealthy father, where would you have gotten all the resources and money you threw at Sebastian? Without that, do you think you could have ever won him over?”
Hearing this, Bella shot Lillian a cold look. It was true. Lillian had been born with a silver spoon, far luckier than her. If not for that, she would never have had a chance.
Brandon and Colin saw how furious their father was and quickly stepped in.
Brandon said, “Lillian, apologize to Dad right now. Is that any way for a daughter to speak? Besides, you can’t deny all the money the family has spent on you over the years. You’ve benefited from this family, so isn’t it right for you to contribute something now? We’re all family, and we’re not asking you to sacrifice anything. Just make an introduction so the family can expand its network.”
Colin added, “He’s right, Lillian. Dad is getting older, and his health has been declining these past couple of years. Don’t upset him like this. The company still relies on him. As long as this family stands, you’ll always be the eldest daughter of the Mercer family. Your status is different...”
Lillian had heard enough.
“Are you finished? As for the money, please investigate it yourselves. If you insist on my help, it’s not impossible. I have three conditions. If you can meet them, I’ll agree.”
Brandon was the first to ask eagerly, “What conditions? Lillian, just name them, and we’ll do our best to fulfill them.”
