Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 40

Sabrina ran towards the wall, but Bella, quick on her feet, managed to grab her and break her momentum. Still, Sabrina’s head hit the wall, not as hard as it could have, but a swell was already forming on her forehead.

Martin was frantic with worry. “Sabrina... it’s not your fault! It’s this ungrateful wretch, it’s all her fault! How could you be so foolish? If something happens to you, how am I supposed to live?”

Lillian’s brow furrowed. Tonight’s drama was getting more and more intense. Sabrina was such a convincing actress that she deserved an Oscar. Her performance was so good, Lillian almost felt compelled to applaud.

Her skill, her willingness to go to such lengths—no wonder her own mother had lost.

The sound of Lillian’s clapping stung them all.

Martin was busy ordering people to tend to Sabrina, fetching a first-aid kit and calling for an ambulance. Brandon was also rushing around to help. This time, even Colin started to rebuke her.

“Lillian, you’ve gone too far!”

Lillian retorted, “A woman living with a married man in this house without any official status is no different from a concubine in ancient times. Serving the main wife her meals and washing her feet on her knees is what she should be doing.”

Even while preoccupied with Sabrina, Martin turned to shout at her, “Get out! You wretched girl, get out of my house!”

Lillian had been wanting to leave for a while. She turned and walked out.

Once outside, Lillian still couldn’t figure it out. The whole charade was to get her to introduce them to this “old Mr. Montrose” from Sevria Bay. Could he be the famous tycoon from the news? How did they come to believe she knew him? When did this misunderstanding start? They were so certain of it, yet she had never even met the man.

But fighting fire with fire had turned out to be a very effective tactic.

Just as Lillian returned to Leonard’s hospital room and was about to close the door, she saw the Mercer family arriving with Sabrina, who was now being admitted.

But unlike the previous night, this time they were quiet, their voices hushed, though still filled with urgency.

Leonard remarked, “Quite the fighter, aren’t you? You sent someone to the hospital?”

“Betrayed by everyone, an outcast. For now, I can only borrow your place to stay, to avoid dying alone where no one would know.” The words sounded sorrowful.

“You probably didn’t get to eat much tonight,” Leonard said. “I saved you some dinner. It’s a specially prepared nutritious meal, rich in nutrients and as good as a Michelin-star restaurant. Care to try?”

“I’ll try. Until the day I die, I’ll take good care of my body to ensure I cultivate a healthy kidney.”

They shared a smile. Lillian’s appetite was surprisingly good. Perhaps because she was so hungry, she finished the entire meal Leonard had saved for her.

Outside, the Mercers bustled about, fussing over Sabrina. Before long, Sebastian arrived. Soon after, Lillian’s phone rang.
