Just then, the bodyguards Martin had called for arrived on the floor.
But it was too late; the old woman was already out.
Martin's heart pounded with fear. "Lillian, are you trying to kill your grandmother? She doted on you so much when you were a child. How can you be so cruel?"
The tubes and lines connected to his mother were her lifeline; they couldn't be moved carelessly.
Seeing this, Martin was livid, but he didn't dare make a move.
The gurney was surrounded by a ring of highly professional medical staff. Brandon, too, was frozen, afraid to act.
"I don't want anything to happen to Grandma," Lillian said calmly. "In fact, I want her to wake up sooner rather than later. Even if you disown me, she is still my grandmother. I have access to the best medical resources. Your attempts to stop me make it seem like you're the ones who don't want her to wake up. So, are you going to let me leave, or will you continue to make a scene here? Think it over."
Martin truly hadn't expected this.
He had naturally planned to refuse when Lillian came to take her. The medical care at this hospital was a massive expense for the Mercer family, yet despite the cost, his mother hadn't woken up. They never believed Lillian could provide better care. After all, who would think she had that kind of capability?
But now, the medical team surrounding the gurney was a testament to her preparedness. The monitors on the equipment trailing the bed showed that the old woman's vitals were stable.
Beside him, a doctor whispered to Martin, "Mr. Mercer, this medical team looks incredibly professional. The equipment they've brought is extremely advanced. We don't even have it in our hospital."
Martin lowered his voice. "What did you say?"
"This equipment," the doctor repeated, "we've only seen it during study exchanges abroad. It's not just that our hospital doesn't have it; very few have been imported into the country at all."
Lillian naturally overheard. "The facts are right in front of you. I'm not doing this out of spite. Grandma's condition is proof enough that you haven't been attentive enough these past two years. If you truly wanted her to wake up, you would have invested more effort into her medical care, and she wouldn't still be in this state today."
"Lillian, are you calling me an unfilial son?"
"It's true that having Grandma alive is useful to you," Lillian retorted. "You certainly want her alive, but just barely. Isn't the reason you tried to stop me because you were afraid I'd mess things up and she'd die? Now you can see I have the most professional medical team, no worse than what you have here. If you stop me from taking her now, you're the one denying her a chance at better treatment."
"You..."
Martin trembled with rage. So many people were watching, and even the doctor had confirmed that Lillian's setup was superior. But if Lillian took his mother, his own losses would be significant. He would lose his leverage over Lillian. And with his mother in this hospital, many people came to visit, giving him convenient access to his network of contacts. If Lillian moved her, he'd lose that easy access. All in all, it was a loss.
