This was a situation Lillian had not anticipated in the slightest.
As Sebastian moved to press down on her, Lillian's hand whipped out, and the sharp crack of her palm against his cheek echoed in the silent room.
While he was still stunned, Lillian scrambled off the bed.
She stared at him, her eyes blazing with such intensity it felt as if she could burn holes through him.
Sebastian hadn't expected it either. Lillian wouldn't let him touch her. She had actually slapped him. He remembered a time when she would fuss over the smallest scratch on his skin, a time when laying a hand on him would have been unthinkable.
She seemed to have put all her strength into that slap, leaving a fiery, stinging sensation on his face.
Before Sebastian could process this stark contrast from the past, Lillian issued a severe warning.
"Don't even dream of it. I sent you the divorce papers a year ago. From the moment you threw me away to take the fall for Bella, it was over between us. Let alone having a child. Do you understand?"
Her reason for accepting the elders' dinner invitation was to find an opportunity to explain this to them. She had come today to make things clear, not to seek favor or to compromise. It seemed Sebastian hadn't grasped that, so she considered the slap a necessary reminder.
That slap seemed to ignite Sebastian's anger as well. He stared back at her, his own gaze turning icy.
"Lillian, that is your son. How can you be so cruel? Are you really going to stand by and watch him die rather than save him?"
"Sebastian, instead of interrogating me, perhaps you should reflect on this: Noah was always frail, but never this sick. Why has his health deteriorated so badly? Before I went to prison, I wrote out a detailed list of precautions. Did you even bother to glance at it? His body is weak; he can't have a large portion of ice cream. A couple of bites is his absolute limit. Yet the day I got out, he was holding a huge serving and ate the whole thing. He's a child; he doesn't have strong self-control. But what about you? Noah's own father? Before you call me cruel, perhaps you should think about what effort you've actually put into your son's health."
Sebastian paused, a faint memory surfacing. Lillian had indeed given him a handwritten list of instructions before she was imprisoned. He had been swamped and overwhelmed at the time, so he had casually passed it to Bella, telling her to pay attention to it. But then he remembered how busy Bella's work schedule was, the immense pressure she was under, and immediately changed the subject. "You're one to talk. Why did you have to start a fight with Bella at Grandma's birthday party? She's a vital asset to the company, yet you always treated her like a rival. You caused trouble out of nothing, and that's what led to this whole mess. Bella did nothing wrong. For you, going to prison wasn't exactly an injustice."
Lillian stared at the man before her, the man she had lived with, slept beside. In that moment, he was a complete stranger. She had married him, had a child with him, and now she felt as if she had never truly known him at all.
