Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 70

Sebastian knew that both his parents were very fond of Lillian, though he never understood why.

"The greatest stain on the Blake family's honor is me," he said quietly. "No one in our family's history has ever divorced."

"And what about you?" Bella asked, unable to hold back the question that had been burning inside her.

Sebastian remained silent. They walked on, the quiet so profound that even the air around them seemed to hold its breath.

Finally, he spoke. "We have to consider the child first. Noah is innocent."

Bella's expression darkened. Then she forced a smile. "Yes, Noah is what's most important."

As they walked, the palpable atmosphere of unrequited love and painful separation was not lost on Lillian, who watched from a window.

Old Mrs. Blake stood right beside her. She had seen it too. For a moment, she didn't know what to say to comfort her.

After a few seconds, Old Mrs. Blake took Lillian's hand. "The day Sebastian's biological mother showed up at my door, pregnant, it felt like my world had collapsed. Lillian, we all have to go through many things in this life. Things we once thought would never happen to us, but then they do, so cruelly. I never imagined that the husband I loved so dearly would have a son with another woman. Even though he later explained it wasn't his intention, that it was an accident, and even after my own investigation confirmed it, I still couldn't forgive him. We separated for a time. But separation makes you understand what love truly is. Sometimes, a love that has endured hardship becomes all the more precious."

Lillian's gaze remained fixed outside, on the retreating figures of Sebastian and Bella. It wasn't that she was masochistic. It was just that her mind was a carousel of memories, replaying the years she had spent pursuing the man now walking beside another woman. She had been mesmerized by him, had given up her own dreams and career for him, believing he was the only thing she would ever want in this life.

When Old Mrs. Blake finished, Lillian finally replied, "Yes. When you're in the thick of it, you can never see clearly."

Old Mrs. Blake paused. "Lillian, are you saying you're an outsider now? You loved him so much back then. Surely now, you don't..."

"I don't," Lillian confirmed, her voice steady. "I don't love him anymore. I've discovered that I love myself more. I care more about my own health. I love my career more, and I care about whether I still have the chance to create something legendary. Not to compete with anyone, not to prove myself. I just don't want to waste this life. I love these things more than I ever loved him."

Old Mrs. Blake sighed. It seemed there was nothing more she could say to persuade Lillian. She gently patted Lillian's hand. "Lillian, the old man and I are getting old. There's so much in your generation's world that we can't interfere with. We were wrong these past two years, neglecting to care for and pay attention to you. In the end, I could never treat my husband's son with another woman as my own. You've suffered. I owe you for that. Whenever you need it, no matter the time, I will be on your side."

"Then please, stand on my side and help me get this divorce."
