Professor Avery looked at Nathan, seeing how difficult the situation was. He had originally spearheaded the government project, but with the older generation of the Blake family stepping in, even his own influence had been diminished.
The Blakes had a firm grip on the project, and all Professor Avery hoped for now was a genuine, collaborative effort between the two companies.
He considered Litech NaLabs the most promising company in the country. It wasn't just favoritism toward his students; Lillian's abilities truly warranted his partiality.
Professor Avery sat down, took a pen and paper from Nathan's desk, jotted down the names of a few companies, and handed the list to Lillian.
"Lillian, if you want to work, pick one of these. I have connections at all of them. Just tell me which one you prefer, and I'll personally make a call to get you in."
Lillian smiled and shook her head. "I'm not a fresh graduate anymore. I can't have my professor pulling strings for me at my age. It would be an embarrassment to you. Finding a job is something I should do on my own."
She refused outright, not wanting him to use up any of his connections or resources for her.
After gathering a few personal belongings from Litech NaLabs and completing the resignation process for her position, Lillian left the company.
As soon as she was gone, the news spread like wildfire.
At the Blake Group, the first person to hear was Hannah, who seemed to make it her business to follow Lillian's every move.
She ran excitedly to inform Bella, "Bella, I've got great news! Nathan actually fired Lillian."
Bella asked, "Was it because of the pressure from Mr. Blake?"
Hannah replied, "Who cares why? The point is, she's gone. It looks like Lillian is in a really tough spot now. I thought that Mr. Cole was so infatuated with her, but it turns out he was willing to drop her in a heartbeat for a profit."
Bella remained silent. She hadn't known from the start that Sebastian had used the Blake family's power to secure the project. And that he was willing to concede two percent just to force Lillian out.
Two percent—that was an astronomical sum of money.
Bella felt a pang of unease.
The only silver lining was that Sebastian securing a government-backed project would be incredibly beneficial for her own reputation.
Bella didn't comment on Lillian being 'fired,' as she had too much on her plate to worry about it.
"Let's get back to work. Other people's lives have nothing to do with us."
Hannah gushed, "That's our Bella—a true career woman, completely unfazed by drama. No wonder you're the only one who could capture Mr. Blake's attention."
Bella lowered her voice. "This is the office. Don't talk nonsense."
Even though many at the company believed she and Sebastian were a couple, she was extremely protective of her reputation as long as he wasn't officially divorced.
Hannah whispered, "Right, right, he's still your brother-in-law for now. I get it. Suddenly, I'm really shipping this. The whole forbidden romance vibe is totally my guilty pleasure."
Bella's face darkened. "What brother-in-law? What forbidden romance? Hannah, are you trying to get yourself demoted to filing papers?"
Hannah quickly waved her hands, shaking her head. "No, no, dear! We're family. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be your sister-in-law."
