Lillian turned to see Sebastian, his car window rolled down, looking at her with the smug expression of a victor.
Her face slowly twisted into a mocking smile.
"I hear you've taken your grandmother and mother in. Their daily expenses can't be cheap, can they? Are you so desperate for a job because you think some ordinary salary can cover all that? You're not a naive little girl in her twenties anymore. How can you still be so delusional?"
Sebastian was usually a man of few words, but she was surprised at how verbose he could be when it came to taunting her.
She tossed the shredded resume into a nearby trash can and walked toward his car.
"Do you really find these games amusing?"
"I don't care what games I have to play, as long as it gets you to come home and have a second child."
Lillian scoffed. "A second child? Do you really think that's possible, given the state of our relationship?"
Sebastian finally lost his patience. "Lillian, this is to save your own son. If you're still prioritizing your romantic feelings at a time like this, then you don't deserve to be a mother."
He then added with a burst of anger, "Damn sentimental fool. I never should have let your relentless pursuit get to me."
Hearing those words, a faint smile spread across Lillian's lips as she calmly delivered the truth.
"Sebastian, you weren't moved by my relentless pursuit. You were moved by money, by profit, by the position of heir to the Blake family. It was never, ever about me."
Sebastian's expression froze for a split second before he got out of the car, grabbed Lillian's arm, and shoved her inside.
"Sebastian, what do you think you're doing?"
"You haven't been home once since you were released from prison, living in another man's house. Is that acceptable? If word gets out, how will that make me and Noah look?"
"Sebastian, you seem to have forgotten that we are in the middle of divorce proceedings."
"You're not getting a divorce until you have a second child. Aren't you afraid of what Nathan will think when he finds out you're a cold, heartless woman who won't even save her own son?"
Lillian reached for the door handle, but with a sharp 'click,' Sebastian locked the doors and windows.
Then, he threw a thick stack of hospital reports onto her lap.
"Take a good look for yourself. Noah's condition is critical. Every second you waste shirking your responsibility is another second his life slips away. Lillian, he's your own child. How can you be so cruel? I only blacklisted you from the entire industry to prevent you from finding a job. Have you ever stopped to think why I would go to such extremes? It's because you crossed the line first, so don't you dare blame me."
A pile of jumbled medical reports lay scattered across Lillian's lap. From the fragmented diagnoses, she could see that Noah's condition was far worse than when she had been imprisoned two years ago.
Yes, if her body were healthy, she could grit her teeth and bear having another child with Sebastian, even if the thought made her sick.
