Lillian felt her ears itching, wondering who was cursing her behind her back.
Just then, Leonard approached with a file in his hand.
He handed it to her. "I need to talk to you about your grandmother's condition."
Lillian's expression immediately turned serious.
"How is she?"
Leonard nodded. "I arranged for a comprehensive examination and assessment for your grandmother. The results are in."
Lillian had planned to do the same, but she hadn't yet found the right doctors. Leonard was always so thorough.
She opened the report and meticulously reviewed each test result.
By the time she finished, she was covered in a cold sweat.
"Is this report saying that for the past two years, my grandmother has been kept in a state where she's just barely breathing? That she's practically no different from someone who's already passed? And that if we were to remove the tubes, her heart would stop beating in less than ten minutes?"
Tears welled up in her eyes, but she fought to hold them back.
Leonard said, "I'm sorry, but her body has reached its absolute limit. This is a report from the world's most authoritative medical experts. The decision to remove the tubes is entirely up to you."
Lillian gasped for air. "Are you telling me that my grandmother is, for all intents and purposes, already gone?"
Leonard replied, "I'm truly sorry. My intention was to help her. I can mobilize all the necessary medical resources for you, but your grandmother's condition... She's elderly, and her body has suffered immense trauma."
The tears she had been desperately holding back suddenly streamed down her face.
She didn't want to cry, not at all.
Slumping onto a nearby sofa, Lillian spoke in a soft, trembling voice. "I grew up with my mother and grandmother. After my mother lost her mind, my grandmother was the only one who took care of me.
"My father and brothers were always so busy. They gave me plenty of money, an allowance that all my classmates envied.
"But they never truly listened to me.
"I told them I had my own workshop, and they just threw a sum of money at me, telling me to spend it however I wanted.
"They said the heiress of the Mercer family could do whatever she pleased.
"My grandmother would make all sorts of delicious food and bring it to the workshop, sharing it with everyone and telling us to come to her if we ever needed help.
"I told them I was going to apply to the best university, that I had already submitted my application.
"They smiled and praised me to my face.
"But later, I overheard my father telling Brandon to contact the university I was applying to, to donate a large sum of money, no matter the cost, to ensure I wouldn't be rejected and become a laughingstock in our social circle.
"Only my grandmother was there, preparing nutritious meals, driving me to and from school without fail, being my rock.
"Later, I told them I had a brilliant professor, Thomas Avery, who hadn't taken on a new student in years but had made an exception for me.
"I remember my father taking a phone call and leaving the room.
