Lillian forced down the shock in her heart and immediately put on a smile.
“It’s like that internet meme, ‘If I die laughing, you can inherit my credit card debt.’ It’s the same idea. I can let you inherit my car.”
Nathan started ranting, “Lillian, are you trying to pull one over on me? I’m not your son. Who wants to inherit your car? By the time your will takes effect, I’ll be in my seventies or eighties. You think I’ll still be able to race? And even if I could, this car would be too old to even move.”
Listening to Nathan’s usual tirade, Lillian breathed a sigh of relief.
Thankfully, he hadn't latched onto the real meaning of her mentioning a ‘will’.
Lillian laughed. “Yeah, yeah, I get it.”
After turning onto a private access road with no cameras, no speed limits, and very few cars, Lillian’s hand, which had been casually resting on the car’s frame, suddenly moved to the steering wheel.
Nathan happened to glance over and see the small movement. His reflexes kicked in instantly, and he grabbed the handle above his door. His other hand clenched the seatbelt.
“Sis, you’re not gonna... ahh...” The word ‘again’ never made it out of his throat before he was slammed back into his seat by a powerful acceleration.
Lillian let out a sudden laugh and warned, “Hold on tight.”
Nathan pleaded, “No... the last time you took me racing, you didn’t have a license. And now, you haven’t driven in years. Sis, my life is still a life, please spare me.”
Lillian erupted in a burst of hearty laughter. “Hahaha... What are you afraid of? Don’t you trust my driving skills?”
The car accelerated with incredible speed, and Lillian’s skill was masterful. As she executed a perfect drift around a curve, her body leaned slightly, while Nathan shrieked like a helpless damsel in distress from the passenger seat.
“Easy, easy! This isn’t a racetrack!”
Lillian called out, “Tell me, if I went back to professional racing, do you think I could still be at my peak?”
Nathan yelled back, “I don’t know! All I know is that I’m about to die!”
As Lillian approached the second curve, she accelerated again, completely ignoring Nathan’s pleas for his life.
The summer wind whipped through the convertible, sending her hair flying back. For a moment, it was as if the passionate, fiery teenage girl had returned.
Freedom was in the steering wheel clutched in Lillian’s hands. In that moment, her mind was clear of all her real-world troubles, filled only with a sense of complete self and absolute liberty.
After a thrilling and cathartic joyride, Lillian drove back to the main city roads, slowed down, and merged smoothly into the traffic, safely dropping Nathan off at his apartment building.
The moment he got out of the car, Nathan’s legs were so weak they trembled like leaves, and he nearly collapsed.
Seeing this, Lillian quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and got out to steady him.
