Chapter 326: Meeting Isabel

Emery quickly broke the silence once more, her voice gentle but insistent. “Could you sit down and talk with me for a little while? I promise I won’t keep you long. I actually have plans to meet some friends later, so it won’t be a big time commitment.”

She desperately wanted Isabel to stay, yet she was careful not to sound needy or pushy. To soften her request, she added a reason for her own imminent departure, hoping it would make Isabel more comfortable.

Isabel finally relaxed, nodding softly. With a graceful motion, she pulled out a chair and settled down, her posture poised and calm.

Seeing Isabel take a seat, Emery abandoned any further small talk and cut straight to the heart of the matter.

“Isabel,” she began, her tone serious but kind, “you’ve seen all the things people have been saying online these past couple of days, haven’t you?”

Emery didn’t believe Isabel was unaware of the online chatter; rather, she presumed Isabel’s polite nature kept her from bringing it up herself.

Isabel nodded in acknowledgment. “Yes, I’ve seen it all. It’s been quite a storm. But don’t worry too much, Mrs. Nygard. Give it a few days, and the noise will die down.”

“Thank you, Isabel. You’re really thoughtful and wise,” Emery said, offering a small, appreciative smile. Yet beneath that smile, she let out a soft sigh, a hint of sadness shadowing her features.

“It’s Marcelo’s loss,” Emery said quietly. “He couldn’t hold on to a good woman like you. Your decision to end the engagement wasn’t just about not clicking with him, was it?”

Isabel’s eyes flickered briefly with a mixture of hesitation and resolve. “Mrs. Nygard, that’s all in the past,” she replied evenly.

Emery pressed on, her curiosity overcoming her embarrassment. “I know it’s awkward to ask, but after everything that’s happened online, I just can’t help myself. Isabel, I’ve always thought of you as part of my family. Can you be honest with me—was there something else going on?”

Faced with Emery’s direct question, Isabel paused for a moment, as if gathering her courage. Then, as though she had made a firm decision, she spoke plainly.

“Alright,” Isabel said, “since you asked, I’ll be straightforward. The real reason I ended things with Marcelo wasn’t just what everyone thinks.”

She took a breath, her voice steady but tinged with a hint of sadness.

“At the beginning, Marcelo and I got along very well. I liked him a lot. Our relationship wasn’t arranged by families, and he felt the same way about me.”

“But every time we tried to be together, Gianna always interfered. She constantly got in the way and stirred up trouble.”

Isabel’s gaze dropped slightly, recalling the frustrating memories. “Whenever we went out to eat alone, Gianna would always find a reason to call Marcelo back—stomachaches, falls, bruises, anything. I honestly don’t know how she managed to come up with a new excuse every single day.”
