From Mob Princess to Mugshot Photographer novel Chapter 125

**Chapter 2**

I set the date for my departure, marking it precisely one week from today. The thought of leaving loomed over me like a heavy cloud, but I knew it was necessary.

The following morning, I arrived at Mount Sinai as I usually did, slipping into the routine of my day. However, I felt compelled to share my decision with the hospital director.

When I broke the news, her expression shifted dramatically. Genuine concern washed over her features as she leaned closer, trying to grasp my reasons.

“Talk to me. Are you unhappy here? Did something happen?” she implored, her voice tinged with a mix of urgency and sadness.

“You’re one of our best surgeons. If you leave, this hospital’s gonna feel it. We need you,” she continued, her words wrapping around me like a warm blanket, but I remained resolute.

My eyes threatened to betray me, shimmering with unshed tears, yet I maintained my composure.

I cherished my work, the intricate dance of surgery, the thrill of saving lives. I would continue to do so, just not in this place anymore.

The director had been instrumental in launching my career, and the thought of disappointing her gnawed at my insides. I feared that if I lingered any longer, I might falter and reconsider. So, I conjured a flimsy excuse and made my exit swiftly.

Upon returning to my office, Melody entered, her mask pulled down to reveal a face etched with urgency.

“Dr. Vaughn, please do my surgery,” she pleaded, her eyes wide with desperation.

I struggled to maintain a neutral expression, my heart racing beneath the surface.

“Your boyfriend doesn’t want you having surgery. Miss Winters, perhaps we should just forget about it,” I suggested, hoping to defuse the situation.

She seemed blissfully unaware of the complexities surrounding her, and I had no desire to complicate her life further.

Besides, I would be leaving soon, and this would all be behind me.

Yet, Melody reached for my hand, her grip tight and pleading.

“Dr. Vaughn, please help me. I’m begging you,” she implored, her voice quivering with emotion.

“You saw him—my boyfriend’s gorgeous. He loves me so much, but every time he gets turned on, he holds back so he won’t hurt me,” she continued, her words tumbling out in a rush.

“But I’m scared. What if some other woman comes along and takes him from me?”

Her vulnerability struck a chord within me.

“We’ve been together almost a year now, and he’s never fully let go. Not even once,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Last month, I tried giving myself to him completely. I ended up tearing, and after that? He took pills for two weeks straight just to kill his drive…”
