Still, the space upgrade had brought Caroline so many surprises that even her hunger had been pushed aside.
But now that she was back in the real world, she finally realized that she was starving.
“Boohoo! I don’t care!” Jet wailed dramatically. “Raven said it must’ve been that little troublemaker Jasper keeping you! Next time we see that furball, I’m plucking it bald!”
Caroline glanced at Raven, who was still sulking with his big head drooping. She walked over and gently rubbed his head. “Yeah, Jasper’s gotten a bit chubby lately. Next time I send you two in there, you can chase it around for a bit to help it lose some weight.”
The moment she said that, she felt a little jolt in her chest–probably Jasper yelling in protest from inside the space.
Raven, however, perked up immediately. He pressed his head against her chest, tail wagging hard, those icy blue eyes full of clingy affection.
Caroline could not help but laugh.
Were these two seriously having separation anxiety?
She did not bother scolding them. After feeding both Raven and Jet, she split some fresh goat milk between them, then served herself a bowl of mutton stew with flatbread, a few side dishes, and a glass of fresh juice.
It was a good meal, and by the time she went to bed, she slept better than she had in days.
But the next morning, she woke up freezing.
For a few seconds, she was still groggy, then it hit her–this was it, the coldest phase of the deep freeze.
Sure enough, when she glanced at the thermometer outside, the number nearly made her gasp: -115°F.
That was even colder than what she had experienced in her previous life.
From her memories, she already knew this period was coming, so she had prepared in advance–using charcoal from the space and keeping the furnace burning strong.
However, she had not expected such a sudden drop of nearly 68 degrees in one hour. The

The existing charcoal was not enough.

She quickly threw in more from her stockpile and only relaxed once she felt the warmth creeping back.
That was when she heard a loud banging on the door–someone was pounding hard.
Bundled up in her thickest coat, Caroline went to open it.
Outside stood Tyler, his expression tense. The moment he saw her, he exhaled in relief. “It’s dropped sharply. I was worried you’d slept through it.”
Caroline nodded. “I’m fine. I’ve already added more charcoal.”
Behind him, Denton appeared, Silver perched on his shoulder, while at his feet sat a small white dog–Snow, who looked bigger and sturdier than before.
“Caroline, people are dying down there,” Denton said grimly. “More than one person.”
Caroline was not surprised. This apocalypse was proving far harsher than the last one she remembered.
At minus 115 degrees, stepping outside the shelter now was practically suicide.
The science team had predicted another drop, so Francis and the army had already taken precautions, but no one expected the temperature to plummet by 68 degrees in just one hour.
Now Francis was facing a nightmare. Six people had already frozen to death inside the shelter -two children, three elderly, and one frail young man.
Most people were pretty satisfied with Francis’s management, but there were always a few troublemakers—and some greedy ones–who wanted to take advantage of the army.
One of the people who died this time happened to be the child of one of those troublemakers.
Now that man was making a scene in the shelter, crying and shouting hysterically.
