This side really had been stripped clean by the army.

Tyler didn’t seem too fazed. “No big deal. We can always head up the mountain later and grab some firewood. Or I’ve still got some gasoline in my storage space, we can burn that to stay warm.”

Just as he reached forward to absorb another layer of snow, both he and Caroline froze.

There was a wooden door buried beneath the snow.

Caroline and Tyler locked eyes, and both could see the same spark in the other’s gaze.

Tyler stepped forward and kicked the door open with both feet.

It hadn’t even been locked, after all, who’d bother locking up a mine in the middle of a snow- covered wasteland?

Beyond the door was a steep downward tunnel.

They both clipped on their headlamps and stepped inside.

After a short descent, what they saw stopped them in their tracks. Coal. Piles and piles of it.

Still untouched, still packed high against the tunnel walls. Iron carts lined the sides, overflowing with coal, layered in heaps, some neatly stacked, others scattered as if abandoned

mid–shift.

Under the glow of their headlamps, the black coal shimmered like polished obsidian, each chunk catching the light like a gemstone.

Even Caroline–who’d seen more than her share of supplies–couldn’t hide the grin stretching across her face.

“It’s beautiful,” Tyler said, almost reverently.

You could hear the awe in his voice. He was just as excited as she was.

Clearly, this mine had been mid–operation before the apocalypse hit. A massive batch of coal had just been unearthed, but before it could be transported out, the world fell apart.

Now? It all belonged to them.

They agreed on the spot that they’d split everything 50/50.

Though at the start, there was one little hiccup.

Tyler pointed to Raven. “Hey, he helped dig us in. He deserves a share too.”

Even with her usual thick skin, Caroline felt a little awkward arguing over the dog’s cut.

After all, Tyler was the one hauling the coal with his storage space, he was taking on more risk.

Caroline waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about it. Let’s just split it between the two of us. Your storage space did the heavy lifting, my Raven helped us get in, call it even.”

Besides, she knew the deep freeze would be over soon. While coal would still be useful after that, she already had a solid stockpile of coal, fuel, and firewood.

And just like that, they settled on a clean 50/50 split.

But what Caroline hadn’t expected was just how much coal this mine actually held.

At first, it was mostly the coal already mined and stacked near the entrance, some neatly piled into small carts, already broken down into chunks.

But the farther they went, the more they found massive, untouched heaps, raw coal that hadn’t even been processed yet. It was everywhere.

As they walked deeper, collecting as they went, both of them grew visibly more excited.

There was just so much of it.

Out there, Dyson and Lisa had no idea—they thought they were winning. But in truth? Caroline and Tyler had hit the real jackpot.
