Caroline crouched down, pretending to pet Raven, but in reality, she was slipping the purple storage space pendant around his neck.
Raven, clever as ever, already understood what she wanted. His tail wagged non–stop, as if saying, “Don’t worry, Human. I’ve got this.”
Though judging by his droopy black face, you’d never guess he had so much drama going on inside.
“Alright, let’s head back,” Caroline said, giving Raven a subtle wink before turning around to walk with Tyler.
Tyler didn’t notice a thing as Raven darted off, quick and silent, veering into the tunnel on the left.
Barely a minute later, he was back at Caroline’s side.
In the darkness, Raven’s fur made him practically invisible. He moved like a shadow–silent, swift, and free.
Caroline gave him a gentle pat on the head. One look into his shining eyes, and she knew he’d retrieved whatever that glowing object was.
She had briefly considered telling Tyler she needed to grab something in the left tunnel.
But honestly, there was no need to risk both of them over it. Raven had abilities that made him the better candidate anyway–faster, quieter, harder to detect.
And more importantly, explaining it would’ve required revealing way too much.
She trusted Tyler now, truly, but that didn’t mean she was ready to lay all her cards on the table.
If the time ever came, if he found something out on his own, or if the situation called for it, she wouldn’t hesitate to share.
But voluntarily opening up everything? Caroline wasn’t there yet.
As the two of them walked back through the tunnel, Raven suddenly leapt forward, landing squarely in front of them–body low, teeth bared, in full attack stance.
Caroline snapped her head up. Her headlamp swept across the tunnel ahead, but nothing was

there.
Still, she trusted Raven’s senses; his ears and nose were sharper than hers by far.
She held her breath and listened.
And then–she heard it. A sound that made her blood run cold.

A dry, rapid scraping noise, like something hairy and spiny brushing against the tunnel walls.
Her face went pale in an instant.
She’d heard this sound before…
A mutant centipede.
And sure enough–there it was. A massive creature, over six feet long, came crawling into view, its countless legs splayed wide, covering nearly half the tunnel.
It raised its upper body upright, antennae twitching like twin scanners in the air–sweeping side to side, searching.
Within seconds, it seemed to lock onto something. Its huge compound eyes fixed directly on Caroline.
The giant centipede’s poisonous fangs clicked together with a sickening snap–snap–snap.
Caroline and Tyler both drew their weapons, a knife and rifle at the ready.
They exchanged a glance, then split off, each circling to opposite sides of the creature.
But the mutant centipede sensed their movement and suddenly launched itself into the air!
What no one expected was that this thing had evolved; it could spit venom.
It turned sharply and unleashed a blast of corrosive venom directly at Tyler on the left.
Caroline’s heart jumped, and instinct took over. She flung her knife in a flash of silver.
The centipede flinched just enough to dodge the blade, and its head jerked to the side, causing the venom to miss its mark.
The venom splashed against the tunnel wall with a violent hiss, instantly eating through the rock, sending up a plume of black smoke.
