He looked back and nodded. “Thanks for the assist.”

Caroline just shrugged. Even without her help, he probably would’ve managed. She’d just moved faster because of her position, and her storage space came in handy too.

That was how teamwork worked sometimes. Whoever reacted first could turn things around.

Just a second’s difference could change everything.

Neither of them fired their guns. They didn’t want Dyson or Lisa outside to hear the noise.

As far as those two knew, Caroline and Tyler were still digging through the snow.

That fight had her blood pumping.

She couldn’t deny that fighting alongside Tyler felt amazing.

They circled the dead centipede and kept moving forward. When Tyler wasn’t looking, Caroline tried to stash the centipede’s body into her storage space. It was massive and perfect for upgrades.

She shot a look at Raven, who was trying to look chill but was wagging his tail so fast that his whole body shook. His eyes said, “C’mon, Human, tell me I did good!”

And then it clicked. Raven had already taken the mutant centipede’s body. Just like her, he didn’t waste a thing.

Maybe they got sick of digging through snow so slowly, or maybe they spotted some unbroken coal and wanted to blow it up. Either way, they’d started blasting.

What Caroline didn’t know was that Dyson’s team was in chaos. They were freaking out.

Her group had faced only one mutant centipede.

After the deep freeze, mutant centipedes showed up as well.

They’d lived in the mine tunnels before, but food ran out underground.

With barely anyone around and everything soaked, it didn’t make a difference whether they stayed inside or outside.

The mutant centipedes followed the scent out and stumbled upon some juicy mutant cockroaches.
