Caroline didn’t think much about it and just stored the mushroom away.

As soon as she stepped inside, Jasper came trotting over, blinking up at her. “Caroline-”

He gave her that flirty look and flopped over, paws in the air, clearly begging for belly rubs.

Then, she remembered that it was his treat day.

She pulled a cat snack from storage and tossed it his way. Jasper happily snatched it up but kept sneaking glances at the mushroom in her hand.

“Hey, Jasper, any idea what this thing is?” she asked, holding it up.

“No clue, but maybe try planting it in Natural Wildlands,” Jasper replied.

Caroline nodded lightly. She hadn’t expected him to suggest Natural Wildlands instead of Farm One, where she usually boosted the storage space’s power.

“That thing is delicious, though,” Jasper added with a satisfied lick.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. Without another word, she simply sent the mutant mushroom straight into Natural Wildlands.

It was her first time planting something there, and she felt a spark of excitement.

She tossed the mutant centipede bodies into the storage space and saw the upgrade bar creep up just a bit. It hit her then–it was gonna take forever to reach level eight.

But now that the space only needed energy, she could reuse mutant remains again and again.

So she fed the centipede corpses to the JunkEater, curious about what she’d get tomorrow.

She walked around the storage space for a while and saw that everything was running just fine. Jasper seemed to have everything under control, so she gave him a few more pets before getting ready to leave.

His fur felt extra smooth and shiny.

Lately, maybe because the storage space had leveled up, he’d gotten rounder, calmer, and a lot more chill–almost like a regular cat now. The change made her laugh a little.

After stepping out of the space, she slept like a rock that night.

When she woke up, Jet was still in a deep sleep, with Raven sitting nearby keeping an eye on

him.

Caroline could tell Jet was right in the middle of his evolution.

She gave him some healing spring water, watching him swallow it slowly in his sleep.

Then, she noticed Raven was holding one paw under Jet’s head like a little pillow. Who knew how long he’d been sitting like that? His paw probably went numb long ago.

“Raven, you can rest if you’re tired. I’ll find something for him to lean on,” she said gently.

She dug through the storage space and found a round post that fit perfectly in the water bowl. It was just the right size to keep Jet’s head above water so he wouldn’t slip under.

But Raven refused to move. He stayed glued to Jet, eyes full of worry, even switching paws to steady the post instead.

Caroline didn’t argue. She knew Raven wouldn’t relax until Jet woke up.

So, she grabbed some pet food and pushed it toward him, afraid he’d exhaust himself.

After that, she ate a quick meal and went to check on the stove and generator.

The weather outside was brutally cold, and the generator had started to act up again.

The solar panels weren’t helping either–there just wasn’t enough sunlight. Even though she’d charged them fully and kept moving them to sunny spots, the stored power was still running low.

The worst of the deep freeze would end in a couple of days, but Caroline couldn’t help thinking how nice it would be to own a generator that never broke.

She wanted one that could handle freezing winters and blazing summers. During the great heat, so many generators had blown up or burned out.

Thinking about that, she stepped into the storage space with high hopes and opened the Junk Eater.

Then, she froze. The mutant centipede bodies she’d dumped in yesterday had turned into … a toy longboat.

It had a bunch of paddles on each side—the kind people row together.
