Luke admitted that he had only gone to such lengths because Laura was Marguerite’s assistant. If it had been anyone else, he would have been direct and ended things much sooner. But because of his friendship with Marguerite, he felt trapped.
Hearing his side of the story, Marguerite felt a pang of sadness for Laura. She had tried so hard, but it was clear Luke had made up his mind. There was no point in pushing him further.
“Luke, I’ve always been curious,” she said, her tone softening. “Who is this person you have feelings for? I always thought you were a bit of a playboy, but it turns out you’re incredibly loyal.”
“We’ve known each other for so long. Can’t you tell me who she is? I feel like I’ve asked you a dozen times, but you never say.”
She was genuinely intrigued. Who could possibly hold his heart so completely for so long?
“She’s someone I can never have,” he said, his voice quiet and heavy. “Don’t ask who it is. It has nothing to do with you. We’ll probably never be together, but that doesn’t change her place in my heart.”
