Once she was in the hallway, Marguerite dialed Luke’s number. They had been friends for years, so there was no need to beat around the bush.

“Luke, what is going on?” she asked, skipping the pleasantries. “What’s happening between you and Laura? She’s been taking care of you at the hospital for ages. Do you have feelings for her or not?”

Her voice grew sharper with frustration. “If you like her, then be a man and do something about it. And if you don’t, then you need to tell her clearly. Why would you let her stay and look after you for so long otherwise?”

She was angry on Laura’s behalf. As a man, he should have shown more integrity.

“Did Laura say something to you again?” Luke sighed on the other end of the line. “I thought I made it pretty clear at the hospital that I’m not interested. But she wouldn’t leave my room. What was I supposed to do?”

“I know you haven’t given up on us, and I thought this whole situation would finally make her realize it’s hopeless. That’s the only reason I let her stay. It was a last resort.”

“She took care of me for a long time, and I won’t let that go unappreciated. I got her a small gift as a thank you. It’s just a token of my gratitude for her help, nothing more. I’ll give it to you, and you can pass it along to her.”
